Is it a Real Carrera??

Hi all, I've been away a while...

I have a chance to get back into the mix but I need help identifying a car. A childhood friend's dad has offered me his 1975 Carrera (non-turbo). It's been laid up a while but still gets driven once per month so maybe just enough??

Anyhow, it is a ducktail car produced in 10/74. I'm trying to determine whether it is a real Carrera or a car made to look like it. He bought it in '77 from a dentist friend and never questioned it.

The VIN# is 91152008**
Color code: 036-9-3

The middle-year-only vin decoder brings it up as a '911S' designation.

It has the black rims, ducktail, front valance. At one point it had the 'Carerra' door decals as well but they were removed when he had it resprayed. How can I be sure??

I have pics but I can't recall how to post them...

Can anyone help me identify it as a true Ducktail Carrera??

Thanks,

Scott

If it's not flared (9 inch flares in the rear), then it's obviously not a Carrera. I don't have my VIN decoder ring handy, but that would tell for sure.

Heck, my '76 actually says "911 Carrera" on the big VIN plate attached on the door post (attached by the organization that "federalized" the car for bringing it into the US) and come to find out, mine's simply a 1976 911. No "S" or anything... :>)

Remember, it's not a Turbo and I don't think the normally-aspirated Carreras were flared. I'm trying to post some pics once I remember the drill...

Normally aspirated Carreras from '74-'77 had 9 inch flares in the rear. Also known as "SC" flares.

Looks like a std 75 911S to me. It does not appear to be flared.

The vin for a US carrera would be 91154XXXX and the RoW carrrera would be 91156XXXX. Get the engine serial number and type from the rib next to the fan to verify the drivetrain.

Actually, if you look closely, the rear flares on the Road and Track pic are 9 inch flares... Check out the rockers - they "flare" out right ahead of the rear wheel. I bet the car above has rockers that are straight.

To add to jpnovak:

According to "The Red Book", it is an H Series 911S (U.S. 49 States) of which 2,310 were produced. The engine Serial # s/b 6450001-6452440 (911/43). Color appears to be the correct special order "Salmon Metallic".

FWIW: a Carrera VIN would be 911560XXXX (RoW Coupe), 911561XXXX (RoW Targa), 911540XXXX (US Coupe), or 911541XXXX (US Targa).

Turbo Vin = 9305700001-9305700284

Hope this helps.

According th the VIN its a US 911S
See Link

The 1975 Carrera had the 2.7 MFI engine, and your car obviously has CIS injection.

You guys are awesome, I appreciate the detailed answers. So it looks like I have a garden-variety '75 911S. That's not bad however as I really like the car. It just makes it a bit more affordable...

What does the green fan-shroud mean??

I know the car has 90,000 documented miles and has been owned by this one dentist (family friend) since 1977. It is a Sunroof car which, for me, is most important.

Looks like a PPI is in order and then we'll see about bringing it home.

I'll keep you posted when we dig it out of the garage and give it a good run around town.

Use a magnet to verify the if the frame and latch brace are steel. If it is then it has a factory Ducktail, which would be unusual for a '75 model year car. Interesting that is has bright trim around the windows. Most '75 model cars had black, I think.

Green fan shroud doesn´t mean a thing on an -75, all are green.

I can't tell if it has the pressure-fed tensioners or '75 exhaust but I did snap a couple of pics in the area...
