Replacing the lower dash upholstery
I've changed my car's interior to black, removed the above toupee in favor of a dashtop, but the band of brown "Stuff" across the lower portion of the dash ( across the ignition, lights, radio and 911T insigna) seems like it might be a pain to remove and replace (because of the ignition and other switches) I could Dye it but that might be messy. What is the best method to go about this ? Are there carbon fiber or black replacements for this or is it just a regular band of upholstery ? Last edited by Deschodt; 04-29-2005 at 12:35 PM.. |

I've done it. I cut a plastic backer to fit and wrapped black leather around it, glued with 3M interior adhesive. There are four pieces: left of the steering column, steering column to glove box, glove box, and the little triangle right of the glove box.
With an early car, you can't use the (common) later trim panels, since you don't have the side vents. |

Deschodt, I just recently did the dashtop on my 77. I don't see how it could be done on the remaining section of dash that you have left. The only suggestion that I have is that you visit an auto upholstery shop to get some ideas from them.

The vinyl is just glued on. Pretty easy job of finding some 72-73 door panels and using the vinyl to cut new ones using the old ones as templates. All you should have to do is unscrew the switch bezels. Install the new pieces and put the switch bezels back on.
