Underheating problem
Just put a "fresh" 3.2 in my 84. Old one was stock with 241K on it, new one has only 103K.
As part of the install, new motor has a heat block-off plate on the left hand side. It's pretty cool and raining now, but just drove around for 45 minutes, sometimes in traffic, and it got to maybe 130 degrees. I have a real temp gauge. The other day, 65 degrees and sunny, I couldn't get it to 180 romping around town. Is this posing any problems I should know about? Is this normal? Motor also has test pipe and stock muffler, and a 93 octane SteveW chip.

Could be a thermostat stuck open, should have gotten warmer than 130 although at 65 degrees it does take a long time to get up to 180, even driving around town. Did you install a new gauge, you say it is a "real gauge" I assume you mean the backdate to the gauge with numbers on it. Did you match the sender to the gauge?

Kurt, thanks, that's it. I installed this kit 2 years ago and it has worked perfectly.

I need to sway senders with my old motor. BTW, anyone who doesn't have this, should definitely get one, especially taking your car to the track.

if it doesn't heat up you'll probably be fouling spark plugs.

Shawn, same thing in my SC, I was running around 150 or 160 (no numbers on my gauge, so I have to estimate relative to the 80 C line on the gauge) yesterday even with a new engine thermostat. I can't find any sign of "leakage" to the front cooler, either, and the front cooler works fine in the warm weather. I think that there is enough cooling just from the tank and lines to and from the tank to keep your oil below 180 in the cool weather.
What was the case with your old motor? Last edited by Tom F2; 04-28-2005 at 04:43 AM.. |

Thanks guys, it's just the sender givent the kit I installed. I need to switch oil temp senders with my old motor. I just got into NYC for the day and it was 140 all the way down.
Recent pic of the car, has a flat decklid now. Someday that darn targa bar will disappear... someday. ![]()

2. Is it something which attaches to the block somewhere? 3. Does it attach to the oil cooler or an oil line? 4. Does it open up/control a thermostaic valve to the front oil cooling loop? 5. That is a nice "Targa", don't molest her beautiful bar - it could save your life one day. ![]()
