I've just replaced the CV joints on one side ,very messy-great fun. When I started on the other side I found spacer/washer thingies that were sitting between the inboard side of the CV joint and the shoulder of the axle ( the side of the joints away from the ends of the axles ).These were not present on the other axle. So now I am confused, do I throw them away or put similar ones on the side already done ?.

sounds like the previous wrench either lost it or couldn't fit the circlip on with the washer. It is a tight circlip fit. I don't know if damage happens without it ?

Earlier cars like yours have the washers. The SC and Carrera don't call for washers at all. But, it would not kill you to put them on. Schorr washers, I think they call it. Some go as far as drilling and wiring the bolts, and replacing with all new bolts.
I, well, just use some red loctite on old bolts. I even re-use flywheel bolts on SC and Carrera with no ill effects. But, that's just me.

Thanks Guys but maybe my explanation wasn't clear. The thingy in question is a large washer that fits over the axle itself and sits up against the shoulder on the shaft as if it was to prevent the CV joint riding over the hump and sliding in towards the middle of the shaft ?
