Replacing oil pressure sender - HOW???

Trying to replace the oil pressure sender on my 88 Carrera. It apparently has a 22 mm base nut, but how in the world do you get to it? Or do you try to twist off the top portion of the sender?

Special tool or technique anyone?

remove that whole block it is mounted on - you may need to mount it in a vise after that

do a search for full details.

Now I've never checked it out on an 88, but if it's at all setup like mine, where it's located way in there, by the breather cover and oil thermostat, theres a main nut secured to the case, and a washer seperates this from the sender, which also has the same size nut on it, only the "nut" on the sender is actually the bolt which goes down into the nut secured to the engine.

Now if I've confused you, if your sender has a washer in between the two "nuts" then you need to loosen the top one, and yes, it's tough to get at.

Here's a pic of mine.

Not sure if it's applicable. But if it helps, great.

sender

The base on my -84 sender is a 24mm. I fabricated a sort of a crows foot tool out of a 24mm open ended wrench to do this project. I suppose you could go buy a 24mm crows foot?!

Fabricate is too delicate of a word for this sort of ... modification.

"Crow Foot will do the job"

Provided one doesn't strip or crack the oil line threads into the case using it. Then you're fixing the case or buying a new case. Take the block off and put it in a vise and then remove the sender. Jim

like jim says! 84-89 requires AC pump off the bracket, then the bracket has to come off, which requires that the muffler, heat tube behind it and the muffler hanger come off too, so you can remove the bottom bolts holding the AC bracket to the center motor mount console. there just ain't enough room otherwise. lots of fun.

PAG moved these things around on different years...

Yes, be careful with the crows foot - or anything else. On my 1986 engine, we removed the whole block and mounted it in a big vise. I couldn't get it lose with a hammer on the wrench... So two of us (the other guy was about 300 lbs.) got a tight fit on the wrenches and pulled with all out might. Both of use wound up falling down on the floor - but we did get the mutha to let go... It is an OSHA hazard to have a 300 lb. guy fall on you...
