Fiberglass Heat Backdate

Received the fiberglass heater duct from Thom today. The part is well constructed and fits nicely with no mods. For proper sealing I did cut the rubber boot that fits around the heat exchanger where it passes through the engine tin. Will try to source the flexible tubing locally tomorrow.

1. Who did you purchase the part from, Thom who? Need his e-mail/ contact information.

2. I thought the only way to backdate was buying old parts, how much did this fabricated part cost you?

3. How much did you remove to get it in?

4. Did you have to remove the fan and alternator?

I also purchased from Thom. The part fits good. It's the easiest way without trying to find ols parts that have to be retro'ed. He does nice work and ships quick.

Thom is aka widebody911. It took about 30 minutes to install. It requires removal of the existing heater blower assembly and the distributer cap. I have the stock heat exchangers so I only had to use the passenger side duct. I believe Thom is working on the duct for the other side. Check out rennlight.com

SCAT and SKEET are two I've seen used by other people. I am looking locally for something that will work.

Looks great. I thought there were also some wiring changes that needed to be made. From threads on this before I saw someone tried a resistor mounted on the engine. Soooo did you have to make any wiring chages or just tape off the wires to the blower motor?

My wife likes heat to, I'll look into heating both sides.

My blower motor is gone along with all of my hoses, the shop said they were shot - I asked for them back just for reference so I could order replacements. The shop contrary to Michigan law did not give me my parts back - never going back there.

Must I do everything myself.

Heat works on both sides using the one duct if you have the factory heat exchangers.

Not on pre-1984. On the Carrera there is a crossover pipe that runs under the engine compartment that joins the two sides. On a pre-Carrera, this crossover pipe isn't there, creating two independant heat paths. At least that's how my SC is.

If you already have or can get your mitts on a set of OEM ducts, having John Walker mod them is the way to go; otherwise my fiberglass repro is an option. If you're weight-concious, the fiberglass part wins hands-down

When I get better at doing the layup and trimming I'll make them in carbon fiber, too.

I'm very close to selling the right-side piece. Here's a prototype piece I pulled a couple days ago. It's ugly because it didn't get gelcoated and I only rough-trimmed it with tin snips.

My SC has no cross-over tube either. I'm just waiting for Thom to finish the right side piece to do the backdate. I had planned to leave the blower and hoses off when I put my motor back in last week but realized with the volitile Michigan weather, I may need some warm air to clear the windows.

If you want to keep the footwell blowers you have to do some creative wiring. Otherwise just tape it off.

Without the rear blower and footwell blowers how much heat do you get? The footwell blowers haven't been working for several years so th eonly heat I get is controlled by the two center leavers. Luckily that's enough for Houston "winters" even without the top on the car. But without the rear blower do I get any heat with the center levers or do I need the footwell blowers?

Elvis what kin of creative wiring are you referring to?

The creative wiring is the resistor mentioned earlier. According to others the backdated heating works better than heating with the blowers - in all cases except at idle. I don't know... My footwell blowers have never worked so I'll try the set-up using passive air heating. After next winter well see, I might have to go back to the original set-up. You guys will know the results if you see a used fiberglass duct for sale in the PP Classifieds.
