69e $7,000. $7,000?

Yesterday I went to go see a 69E for $7,000 not too far from my house. I didnÕt make an offer. With all the crazy pricing I see for pre 74 models I wanted to get a reality check on what a car in this condition is worth.

The car has not been started for twelve years, we donÕt know why, only that when it did run, it smoked.

Both heat exchangers and muffler are missing and the heat exchanger on the right has been sawed off rather then unbolted. I guess thatÕs faster. The exhaust openings have not been plugged with rags so they are open to the air. The rest of the engine is complete except for the air cleaner assembly that sits over the carbs, carbs are also open to the air, I think they have rain water in them.

The car was originally beige but was repainted white. Rust issues will most likely necessitate a repaint. From underneath the car the pans are all dented upward but surprisingly, are solid, very minor surface rust. Footwells have ample surface rust but no rust through. Battery boxes and trunk have a fair amount of rust but again, no rust through. Both sills, under doors, are bubbly but I canÕt determine the level of rust without more inspection. Front passenger side quarter panel rusting through towards the lower rear.

The seller has owned the car for a few weeks.

IÕm not looking to bad mouth the car or seller, just looking for an objective assessment on price.

Considering the condition of the motor I would price this car as a roller. So $3500 to $4500. A 69E mtor is not one I would want to rebuild so I would part the motor out and look for a 3.0 or 3.2.

$3,500-$4,500 sounds right to me.

I think the seller has been looking on ebay and sees cars selling for 20-30k so he's going from there.

So, it has a lot of rust, AND it needs an engine??

With your comments on rust, I am reminded of the old "tip of the iceberg" concept.

Sounds like this is a total restoration...I think tat when the resoration cost is compared to a best possible restored sale price, there won't be much, if any profit.

So, what are teh decent parts left worth?

I think $3500 would be more than fair, depending on the condition of the remaining parts.

I think you guys are being too kind to the seller on this one!
Water in the carbs?
"Both sills, under doors, are bubbly but I canÕt determine the level of rust without more inspection. Front passenger side quarter panel rusting through towards the lower rear."
This is a marginal parts car with not a lot of parts IMO. 15-2500 tops.

I have to agree with real's comments. Remember, water in the carbs = water in the motor. How long has it been like this? 12 years? Does the motor turn over?

I'd look at it from a parts value position -- and don't ignore the TIME involved pulling, inspecting and shipping parts in making any estimates on value if you might part it out. What wheels does it have? Are they deep sixes in good shape? (That's $1200.) Are the carbs Webers? (In good working order that's $800.) How's the interior? (In excellent condition, you'll have some money there.) Does it have a the tool kit in the trunk? (Couple of dollars if it's there.)

If the current seller has just owned it a few weeks he may have picked it up really cheap (maybe a few hundred dollars) and is looking to turn a quick buck, or he may have over-paid (in the few thousand dollar range) and is hoping someone will get "emotional" about buying a Porsche (just like he did) and pay too much too.

Edit: Looking at the additional pictures on page two, I might have to change my opinion above; there could be some $$$ to that car...

Just incase it helps the wheels look like 14s so they are not worth anything like as much as deep 6s.

Shouldn't that car have MFI, not carbs?

911E??? The E means the car should be mechanically injected. Frankly, going just by the pics, I'd say this car needs a TON of help before it could even become a decent driver.

Why did they put the 'Porsche' rear reflector on a pre 74? That snobbish piece of plastic is one of the biggest turn offs for me for the post 74s. And then to keep the nice chrome badging? Its like one of those chevys with chevy stickers on all parts. Bad taste IMHO.

The fact that the car is being turned over so quickly gives me a really bad feeling. Someone is getting screwed. $7k is alot for this roller as has been stated. Assuming that the interior and the rust was not all to bad I would definately look around 3000.

From here you would be lucky to get 2500. Add the cost of shipping from Cali and thats a pretty penny for a car that needs whole lot of work to become a driver.

Judging by the rear deck lid (holes and dirt) I am guessing at one time there was a whale tail on it also. I agree with the guys this is a less than
$2400 car, probably a parts car

That car was on Craigslist. If he had it a couple weeks, he may have picked it up for cheap and now tries to flip it for a profit. How do you do that anyway, without registering it in your name / title transfer? Is that legal if you aren't a dealer?

He may also have bought it with restoration in mind and then realized what a heap he got.

RUN, not walk from this one.

Here is his original AD

"I have a very nice 1969 Porsche 911 E project car. It has not run in 12 years. It has been stored indoors. It is mostly complete and rust free.
Currently not running, I am selling it for 7K in cash. Or I am willing to trade for ?? possible trades include ...a 356 project car.. or an other car , motorcycle or truck worth about 7K."

He claims rust free

For someone who already has a long hood and is looking for parts, it might be a good deal in the $3K - $4K range. Even with that, the rear bumper and grill are both wrong. I agree, it doesn't seem like a $7K car to me. If you're feeling lucky I'd walk in with a few thousand in cash and try to take it off his hands for about what he seems to have bought it for.
