fan painting suggestions

I have purchased a new fan and it is in UPS transit as we speak. I assume it will be unpainted. Would it be cheesy to paint it red with spray paint?

Not what I would do but a search may uncover some really nice color keyed engines. I'm sure there are some red example to see into the future.

You may also want to search for the process for preparation wether you paint or powder coat.

I should throw in that it is a gaurds red car. My main question is if regular spray paint is cheesy? What exactly is powdercoated? Is it always gray?

Rattle can spay paint won't hold up. I've had good luck with powder coating with special attention to using a thin coat esp at the fan tips. The fan metal tends to be full of oil so a good degreasing is in order.

If it's a new fan then there will be an uneven coat of cosmoline(?) on there. It looks like crap from the factory.
Powder coat (Electrostatic "paint") is a powder that is sprayed onto an electrically charged metal. This allows the powder to adhere to the object. The coated object is then placed into an over where the powder melts, creating a very hard and durable surface.

The fan will have to be cleaned up, perhaps by media blasting, and heated/degassed for the powder to take properly. The fan is made of magnesium.

It is a matter of time, whatever you use will come off with time... and go to the cooling fins...

I'd look into getting the fan powdercoated. I've had limited success with painting items in the engine bay. The first time grease or other solvents gets on them the paint never looks the same. Additionally, though its not terribly difficult to remove the fan, it is a pain so its probably not something you'll want to remove and repaint on a regular basis. But, definitely add some color to that engine bay!

I've had success with high-temp VHT clear on engine components. If it's baked on it is quite durable. Some bake in their BBQ grill.

Cool Rick. Now what is VHT clear. Is it a spray can? Do you paint then apply the on the VHT clear. Or is it a cream and clear like Balco and Barry Bonds do?

VHT is a brand of paints that pretty much caters to engine, exhaust and brake caliper paint crowd. I used clear on my fan after I blasted it and it's held up very well. Do you need high temp paint? Not really but it's designed to be cured and I beleive that add to it's durability. As mentioned you don't want to thick a coat on there so I'd probably just do color.

You can powdercoat the fan no problem. You can do it in any color you want. My guy even has the entire HOK candy line. Be warned the fan is magnesium so it will gas out in places...that is bc of the material. If you powder coat it I would sand the edges down about 1/16 of an inch to allow room for the powder. I had mine polished and it looks awesome. I had the fan housing done in red.
