Oil Line ?
I have a 71 911t and am soon to change the oil line running from the oil tank to the opposite side of the engine.. After looking at it, it seems that I will have to remove the lower exhaust in order to get the the line that connects the the engine side.... Anyone ever change theres? Do I have to remove the exhaust? any tricks?
Thanks. Mitch

I just changed the "hard line" on my SC. You will have to remove the heat exchanger and one of the oil return tubes to be able to get a wrench on the oil line fittings. If you still have the one piece oil return tubes, you will need to have a set of the two piece tubes available to put back in place of the one piece unit. The old tubes are removed by crushing them with a pair of pliers and twisting them until they come out. The two piece tubes simply slide into place (with a dab of good seal lube and some effort) and are held there by a circlip lock ring. Probably the most difficult part of the job will be removing the old heat exchanger without breaking an exhaust stud. You will need an oxy-acetylene torch or maybe an oxygen-mapp gas torch to heat the 6 nuts cherry red in order to remove them without breaking a stud. If you do happen to break a stud, it will have to be drilled out using a special drill guide plate. This may be a job that you will want to have done by a professional (Porsche) shop as it must be done correctly. Good luck with your project!

What is the Oil return tube you are referring to?..... I was hoping "you" wouldnt say I would need to heat them up... hmm.. I'll begin spraying lube penetrant on them.. : / Thanks for the reply! Mitch

Once you get the heat exchanger off, you will see the oil return tubes that run from the cylinder head to the engine block. You will need to remove at least one of the tubes in order to get wrenches (use 2-one for the big nut and one to keep the fitting in the block from turning) in place. Once you have the new oil line installed, you will be able to intall the replacement oil return tube and then the heat exchanger.
Note: Be VERY, VERY careful getting the heat exchanger exhaust studs off! It is quite easy to break an exhaust stud and then the remaining piece will have to be drilled out. Unless you are a fairly experienced mechanic, I would have this job done by a professional shop! Good luck with your project.
