Question Ignition Wires

My ignition wires (Beru) braidid on my 79 911sc seem to not last long at all.

If I touch them whil at idle I feel the juice....

Any clues? The Braids seem to be grounded properly....

Thanks in advance,

Alex in NJ

It's that dang German insulation. And then you wonder why they lost the war? Notice all the high voltage engine warning stickers in German?

Another reason our host carries better yet cheaper wire choices.

Cheers,

Joe

I put a set of Jacobs plug wires on my '74 and they fit really tight and "snap" when they're seated on the plug so you know you have got a good connection. I paid $129 for the set, I think...

I just got a set of Magnecors from Pelican today for my 86 Turbo. I replaced the right side, but the left side is almost impossible to access. Looks like a fair amount of dis-assembly to replace them. Looks like a real pain in the butt.

Sorry to hijack, but a related wire question.

Do any of you have your coil in right side up? This is required for my MSD Blaster coil. As a result, the original coil to cap wire was too short.

Do the Clewitts have a longer coil wire? What are you guys doing to compensate?

Why is it required? I have two MSD Blaster coils (twin ignition) mounted upside down, car has run superbly for 9,000 miles and I don't remember seeing anythng about the coils needing to be installed right-side up in the sstuff that came with the coils. Not saying you're wrong, just asking if I am.

Mounting your coil upside down is not a bad idea. At least it will keep water from collecting inside the connnector along with the corrosion that follows.

Cheers,

Joe

From the coil spec and install sheet found here

http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/8202_8222_8223_frm22698.pdf

"it is recommended to mount (the coil) in an upright position. The high vibration coil can be mounted in any position due to it's epoxy potting compound."

I've heard this in many cases and have also seen it in threads here. Apparently, because of the oil or whatever is inside the coil, it should be mounted upright. The only coils, as stated above that do not require this are the high vibration coils, due to their greater stability and differing construction.

I've seen numerous threads of shortened life spans on coils (less than a year) and correlations to inversion.

Ah. That's the answer. I have the HV coils, which are the only ones I'd consider using anyway.
