to be or not to be a porsche tech

i am a porsche tech at a dealer. I am factory trained I am trained on the the new 997 987 and cgt. It took a lot of effort to get to this point. Our dealer is not busy enough to make a living in this town. I need to make about 60K and am now making less than half of that. I am thinking of going to work on another line of cars until I can move to some where I can make more money working on theses cars. What do you guys think?

it's hard to get $25hr unless you have a lot of years/experience with a particular product. how long have you been a porsche tech, or worked as a line mechanic? you have to be able to produce a lot of money for an employer, without many comebacks, to get a decent paycheck.

I have been a line mechanic for two years porsche only for one year. I understand about the rate of pay. it is the volume that concerns me. I am at work for 45 per week but. we only have enough for me to flag about 22 hours per week. At another dealer I might make less but get more hours 70 or 80

I think you are in the wrong location, IMO there isn't a huge market for new Porsches in Baton Rouge, LA.
I think if you were in the New York, DC, or L.A. region you would be better off. For example in the DC metro area, newer Porsches are everywhere, from Boxsters, 996's,997's, to GT2's. Good luck.

You're in BTR? I'd agree re the market - unless you want to wait for the next oil boom in "Boss Rouge." I suspect the economy will support a few more soon, and then go down. Now, this is a town that can barely keep a good restaurant open for 4 consecutive years... Same reason - it is too easy to go down to NOLA for food, Porsches, music ... Unless you want to move to NOLA, I don't see a huge market in the state. But, it will be hard to find a place with as low a cost of living as BTR - esp. anywhere in Mass. or NJ. Maybe in far west NJ if you can find a house. But then - no Porsches... just old pickups (or maybe it's all changed there now).

I came from ma before i started my journey to be a porsche tech. i still have a house right outside of boston. I was thinking about Cary, NC. Anybody from that area?

I used to live in Baton Rouge and I had my car serviced at B.H.
the Porsche was in with the BMW. Cresent City in N.O. has
a fairly large service dept although not a nice shop but it did
a good business. Dallas has a good Porsche dealership
selection with Boardwalk and Park Place, Boardwalk is one
very nice dealership ! send out some resumes see what
comes back and good luck.

I know some independent shops in ma like rene from framingham. I know that i am going to have to move but after moving 3 times in the last 2 years just to become a porsche tech I am trying to think about this next move very carefully. I can go to toyota and make the money. that want. Enough to buy a nice porsche, and then play with my car on the weekend.

So after you put so much into obtaining your goal, you contemplate giving up so quickly? I think you should consider very carefully your next step!

You need to be in SF. There are more Porsches around here than most any other car on the road. Intimidating if your an SC owner like me.

Some advice from a 25 year veteran. Since you are new at the game with only 3 years experience, you have a long uphill climb ahead. The car business is very, very tough.

Regardless of the brand you work on, even Porsche dealers, they all basically suck from a techs view point. Dealer service departments today really are there only to support the current product. IE: warranty, warrranty, warranty. Don't listen to the siren songs of 80% COD and 20% warranty. It's the other way-round.

The tech is automatically at a disadvantage because warranty times are generally @50% of COD work. Very few people today take their vehicles to the dealer for COD work.

Dealers are a great place to obtain training and experience with a particular line, but then it's time to move where the money is. Aftermarket / independant shops.

Know also that if you want to continue the P-career, Porsche shops are few compared to other high-line makes
