Wanna come tell me all about my 1970 Porsche 911T in Parker Colorado?

Hey all-

I am hoping to find someone who has restored an older 911 to come to my garage in Parker (SE of Denver) and just talk me thru my vehicle. Take a look over the car, tell me what you would do, etc. (I was told maybe Grady Clay would be willing?? )

I've ordered new repair panels for the gas support and battery tray. My buddies dad will weld it. BUT, I would love some insight from someone who has been there.

Anyway, coffee (or beer) on me for your time. And thanks to everyone on these forums for all your stories. They have been invaluable!

Bill

I'm sure the Colo. Pelicans will chime in soon.

Based on the one image you posted, I would suggest you get that tub down to bare metal to expose all the rust before you start welding in panels.

Nice project. Good luck!

search for Lars (speedo) or emptyo. Lars is finishing up a screaming cool project. Do a search for SWB project and speedo , and you should find it.

Drive it out to High Plains Raceway in Byers next weekend (July 18-19) for the PCA event and you'll get a whole bunch of help! The event is free for spectators.

Or come out the the club race on August 15-16 and there's a good chance you'll see an engine drop track-side

Anything you need tool wise, hit me up. I'm not an early car guy, but I have most of the specialty tools for 911's. Well a few are at Gogar's house, but that's only because I can't find time to get them.

Hey Bill,

I'm usually down towards Parker on Wednesdays, but would possibly make another trip. What's your schedule like?

Bill,

I am in Lone Tree and could come by at night to take a look...I have restored a 71S Targa and just completed a nut and bolt on my 70 vintage racer (just don't have time to post all the results like Speedo). Shoot me a PM with your info and I will get back to you.

Thanks,
Sam

Thanks all! I would love to get to an event. I am taking the family to Europe next week till August 10th, but will certainly hit one up when we are back.

My project page is at www.BillLeVasseur.com/911 Plenty of pics there.

I read Speados thread and I immediatley asked the wife for more of a Porsche allowance every month... lol. I am a former F-16 Crew Chief in the Air Force, so the tech stuff is not a problem. But I never had to remove rust and weld in new metal on my jets...

Scott- Looks like all welding stuff at this point. Once the body is tight, I will start with the Porsche specific work. Thanks!

Emptyo- I work from home. Wednesday is perfect for me!

Sam- I am PMing you now.

Great forum. Thanks again all! Tomorrow I start removing the old rusty battery tray area...

wow, looks like quite a project! I think you'll be needing a number of the CO guys plus all you can get from Grady!

Good luck!

Dude, I have one thing...

Just scrolled though all of your pics... If I were you, I would get all of the ones where you are smiling, blow them up to poster size and hang them all around that garage.

Looks like you have your work cut out for you, but you look like you obviously have the fever, so use that to your advantage. Good luck! Looking forward to the progress.

Next steps:
1. New batt tray and gas tank metal.

2. headliner and dash cover so I can reinstall the windshield and back window. And then replace broken driver vent window with plexi. Then she will be weather tight again...

All electrical is good. Engine even cranks over. This should be easy.... Lol. (just finished reading "gold plated Porsche" and am more inspired than ever).

Congrats! I looked at your pics, and +1 to what Shane said, but don't worry. You are in the right place, and Colorado has a great group of guys who are very willing to help you out. Um. . . . don't start that engine anymore, please.

Hey Gogar...

yeah, my buddies freaked out when I told them I turned over the engine. I wasn't hoping to fire it up and cruise down the street. I wanted to know if there were electrical gremlins, if the engine was seized, etc etc.

I changed the oil and filter, added fuel additive, and put in a new battery. I oiled up the cylinders and then turned the key to on. Everything lit up! And the wipers even came on.

So, I turned over the engine a few times. The linkage to the carbs was free, but the carbs themselves were stiff. Squirted some carb cleaner in, and the next day they were looser. But, since I had already removed the gas tank, I haven't tried it again.

Since I had so many dead mice living in there, I just assumed the wires would be messed up, or the engine crapped up. So far, so good.

But, no more starting for a while...

Thanks!

I'm no expert but I would think headliner, dash and windshield are the last things you'd want to do. It looks like a lot more welding will be needed in addition to the gas tank and battery supports. Good luck with a great project.

I am just trying to get it "water tight" again by getting the windshield and rear glass back in. I could just pop them in, and do the headliner and dash later, but I am just afraid the more I mess with the glass, the better chance I have of breaking one or both...

But, thats exactly the kind of insight I am hoping for. I am just a little too excited to get it on the road, and would love to get that list of "well, if I were you I would do..." from someone who's been there...

Thanks again Jerry!

Looking quickly at some of your pictures, looks like you are going to end up doing a full restoration. Drop the engine, build some car dollies, and start taking everything off the tub.

I started out "just" replacing the front pan.

The original color was 2424, Burgundy. Then a horrible gold paint over that.

I want to do a "rolling restoration". Get her rust free, drivable, and then sell my Ranger to pay for the restoration. Its actually in really good shape. Just dirty and the paints flaking off....

Man! I thought my car was rusty!

I have to agree with whoever said you're going to do a full restoration. I think this one might be hard to do a "rolling resto" on, but I appreciate your need to get her on the road. The weather is finally nice here in CO.

Hope to see you at one of the Coffee and Cars events soon.
