83sc to 993 Body Conversion
Well, after ruining a perfectly good pair of pants by seeing my first 993 up close, (We ain't git much of those in these here parts) I think I am going to do a 993 widebody conversion.
A few questions though. Fiberglass kits seem to be plentiful and relatively cost effective. Those of you that have fiberglass rear flares molded onto the steel; How was the fit? How are they holding up with a few years and some hard miles on them? As far as steel parts. Are there aftermarket available? I cant seem to locate them. Are the people doing steel using parts from Wrecked cars? It seems the common train of thought is to go metal flares if at all possible. I guess what I am wondering is will the fiberglass/metal bond stand up? I am slightly concerned about expansion rates as well. Our climate can very easily get below -40 in the winter (and well over 100 in summer) and I usually keep the garage only marginally above freezing. I sure wouldne want to see paint crack because of the cold. Any good tips for doing such a conversion from anyone who has done such a thing? I am also posting in the parts section, looking for such parts. Thanks Jeremy |

Hi Jeremy,
I did a 993 conversion but on an earlier 70T chassis. I went the fiberglass route mainly because of cost. If you go all steel it gets a little spendy. After several years everything is holding up perfectly. No cracks, no nothing. Doing the conversion was a lot of work, and I mean a lot. I basicaly had to re-do or change every piece for good fitment. I think if you went with some higher quality stuff than I did you might have better luck. You can see plenty of pics on my website. Personally, I'd be very concerned of the cold tempatures for the fiberglass. I'm in CA. |

Wow. Looks good in the pics though. Out of curiosity, you suggest "higher quality" parts. What/who's kit did you use, and what kit do you think may be better in fitment.
If you do not wish to express those opinions out in the open, please PM me. Thanks (Great looking car)!! |

You should do a search on fiberglass and get different opinions. I used Better Bodies in San Diego. It's been years now so they might have improved, I have no idea. Some of the ones that seem to get good reviews are MA Shaw, Getty. I'm sure others have more recent and additional opinions.

just buy a 993 and weld flares onto it. more cost effective, big brakes, big motor, coilovers, ac blows cold. we have a widebody conversion in the shop now and i parked it next to my boss' 993 s and even though it was done very well, all steel it still looks a little funky. Have you thought about bolt on FG flares for a racey look? easier and they look *****in, more for a track car though. Add it all up, you can get a stock 993 for pretty cheap these days, or at least thats what I have seen.

Yeah, Cheap in Canada is not the case though. The least expensive 993 in the Canadian auto trader is $42,500 asking price! Plus I have this SC that already requires some bodywork.
Bolt on flares just dont do it for me. |

Yes, I have been looking at Getty, BB, and Mashaw sites. They seem to be the most popular. Getty's is a fiber-reinforced plastic best I can tell.... Maybe a bit more forgiving than standard Fibreglass??

Jordi: Are your bumpers and parts glass? How did you find the fit and finish? That is definately the wing I desire. How was it to go on?

I did this conversion but from a 73 911 , I also put a 3.6 in it . All the parts are carbon , bumpers , doors , front fenders , rear quarters . It has held up with no probelm. I just sold this car . I now wish I didn't .

I would only use Getty Design parts , very high quality and good fit.
http://www.gettydesign.com They supply parts to people like MAShaw. You can get Getty Parts cheap from: http://theracersgroup.com/parts/bodywork.htm --- ask for PAUL

By the way you can buy the GT2 wing as a complete 993 decklid so it is just a bolt on.
![]() You can also get kits which are cheaper : ![]() ![]()
