Rear Suspension Noises

Okay, I have some noises coming from the rear that I just can't pinpoint. They are metalic clunking noises that tend to occur over small bumps and slow speeds, and when I change direction (left and right) at higher speeds - I can't say for sure if the two noises are the same or unrelated.

So far I've replaced the rear bushes with Elephant Racing Polybronze, added new 27mm TB's, replaced swing arm bushes with factory rubber. I don't have a rear sway bar. I guess it comes down to the shocks (Koni), the CV joints, or the wheel bearings...

I look forward to any ideas/experiences/advice

I to have just started to experience some noises from my 68 T. I have also just replaces the bushings & shocks. The noise on my car seems to be coming from the drivers side rear wheel. I have done a little reading up on what the noise could possibly be & it seems that a CV joint might be the culprit. I'm not very familiar with CV joints & the noise just appeared. I haven't had the time to check it out yet but that is what I'm guessing what the noise is.

I had an untraceable clunk from my right rear suspension too. Spent hours checking and re-tightening everything back there, to no avail. One day, when accessing the DME, I found a larg-ish nut loose under the driver's seat . . .

Changing direction at high speed sounds like the wheel bearings...

The other sound, clunking sounds over bumps etc... makes me think CV joints (I traced my clunking sound back to my right CV join).

Northcoastcab had a problem like this (and me). He solved it with wheel bearings.

I too replaced the swing arm bushings with Elephant. Still have the clunk.

Thanks guys.

Pretty sure I've nothing loose (at least that I can reasonably find) in the cabin. I emptied everything out this weekend for DE.

I've torqued up the upper and lower shock mount fasteners. The CVs are the originals and I've no doubt that they are fast approaching use-by-date. Given the advice recieved, I'm beginning to lean towards the bearings (plus it's a cheaper fix to the CVs )

Anyone else have any experiences?

I had a clunking. Was the right rear engine mount. I put a big fender washer on it. No more clunking.

Did the noise exist prior to installing the polybroze? I had the same problem and finaly fixed it yesterday. I had tighly shimmed the races, but didnt shim the outer bushings very tight. I've now reshimmed the outer bushings and the noise went away.

I also replaced the thick shim/washer that comes with the bushings with 2 M10 washers to compress the assembly tighter (still check for free movement with no t-bar).

Good Luck

Thanks Pat, I'll have a closer look at the mounts... they are relatively new (3yrs) "sport" mounts, but I'll double check the torque.

Bernie, yes the noises have pretty much existed since I've had the car (4yrs), I felt sure the noise was the spring plate bushes, but it would appear I'm wrong. I had to re-do one of polybronze bushes as I had "under shimmed" the races. I also used some polyurethane calking in the "sockets" as they were just too loose even with shimming.

I've also always been unhappy with the old and unservicable 901 gearbox mounts, but I intend to remedy these with Wevo's new product.
