what would it take to 996 engine a 72 911
These are freakin cheap.
I assume the trans pattern and clutch setup is different. I assume you would need the new cars electronics complete including ignition switch Of course you'd need to set up a radiator system. but heck the 3.4's put out 300 hp. that would be hella sweet in any early car! has anyone done it yet?

The general consensus is that it's not worth the effort. You can get far and away more bang for the buck with a 964 or 993 engine.

i think kelly moss or morse has done this, he has a website, you can find it pretty easily. if your gonna pop in a water pumper why not a gt3 motor? better case, more power, proven race parts bla bla bla.
good luck

Yep looks like Kelly moss put a GT-3RS waterpumper in a 993.
Thom, I agree it would be a pain in the a$$, but these engines seem to turn up for half the cost of 993 engines and to put one in a early car you still have to complete a lot of mods/change overs. Having said that I also realize you have been there done that and I respect you thoughts on the subject.

I emailed Jeff at Kelly Moss and asked some questions, we'll see what info he offers....
Amir is right, you can get a 3.4 for the price of a set of pistons for darn near any aircooled 911. Freakin cheap. Maybe they are junk, I don't know, any input on the 3.4's and associated problems? Thanks guys

I talked to the guy at LA Porsche (porsche wrecking yard) and he told me a buddy of his, after cutting up the interior of his carrera and trying to make it work finally gave up. Said there was just no way to do it.

I seem to remember something about you also need the instrument panel to keep the 996 engine management happy...I may be wrong.
I did see (a video) a 996 twin turbo in a VW Van...it did have the instrument panel as well. I think Harald has details on this.

they are cheaper for a reason, the water cooled case sucks, i do not think porsche warranties the water cooled cases on the track. Look under a turbo, gt2 or gt3 and look at the case, I believe it is a 964 case number. Now why would porsche use an older case on their highest output motors instead of the new water pumper case? If those water cooled motors are so cheap you could put a new one in each time one of them pops on you. I do remember seeing a gt3rs motor for sale on the racers group site for something like 12k...

by the time you get it in I bet you spend as much as popping in a 3.6
as well as taking years off your life in pure frustration plus you'll never live down the fact you put a blasphamous water cooled engine in a classic 72 chassis MJ |

If sombody could put together a timmons style kit for a subaru turbo 4... i think there would be a lot of takers. 300+ reliable horsepower for cheap. blasphemous? Its just a car. its not like its a ferrari.
![]() I know the porsharu guy was working on it, but I haven't seen any updates lately.

Yes the Engines from the VW Busses came from me , First Guy had over 100 K in the Conversion ( 996 TT ) , his Friend 60 K (996 , 3.6 ) The Engines was 25 for the TT , 11 for the 3.6 . Figure about 6 and 3 for the Trannny . The Rest was Conversion Cost . You can not compare this with a 3.6 Aircooled Conversion as you will encounter Problems you dont even dream of ,not only on the electronic side . A GT 3 Engine is completely different as it uses the 964/993 Case and Crankshaft and more simple electronics . But these Engines go for about 25 K used for the Street version , a normal 993 for a 3. a varioram for less than half . Harald |

I swear I saw something somewhere about a guy who had done this. What I'd rather see tho, is a light wt. motor with 300 hp put into a 911. Say something that weighs about 200 lbs. ...

I have an 05 STI... 300ftlbs torque, 300hp... This is the sweetest performing engine I've ever driven in a car. It pulls to redline, has a nice lopey sound. It would be awesome in my 911 cab. The awd driveline is somewhat heavy and wasteful... this engine in the 911 would be the best.
