No oil burned.

I've had my 83 911 since december 04. I topped of the oil in january. 4000 miles later today 5/7/05 I checked the oil level, I haven't used up any oil. the level is still the same as when i filled it last.

Did I get lucky or what. This car is absolutely tight. No smoke no burning oil.

Pretty good. My SC seems to use a quart every 1500 miles or so.

That's pretty good... mine doesn't use much (I think), but gets rid of its oil by leaking.

I believe you got very luck

How many miles (since last rebuild??) on the engine?

What type of driving are you doing? If it's a lot of "stop and go" or short trips then you may have water in the oil that is maintaining the level. If you go on a long sustained drive that gets the engine hot you may notice the oil level drop as the water burns off. If you're running natural oil 4000 miles is a 1000 miles too long an interval for a 911 engine. Jim

____

My driving for the last 4k miles is a mix of long and short(stop and go) trips. I'd say, 2k miles of that are long drives at least 80 to 150 miles per trip. The car was also my daily driver for about 3 months while I had my M5 in the shop. Finally got my BMW back as my daily driver a couple of weeks ago. Now the SC is garaged during the weekdays. And I plan to drive the SC only for fun rides.

I am running on natural oil. I've been considering switching to full synthetic but am concerned that i will develop leaks in the process.

The indicated oil level will change based on how hot the car is when you check it. When you 'topped it off', was the engine running and up to 180 degrees? If you're checking it now and the car's 200 degrees, it could look like the oil level hasn't changed. You should fill it to a point midway between the two dots on the dipstick.

Jack,

Yes, the temp was right on the first marker. I think that's at 90 celcius or about 194*F on both accounts (topping off/reading measure.

This thing is, when i topped for the first time, i filled to the max. i know better now to just fill between the two markers on the stick. One thing, I didn't notice any excess smoking if I overfilled.
