Improved replica early 2.0 replica timing sticker

Here's the 2nd-generation version of the replica early ('68 and earlier) 911S & 911E 2.0 sticker:

ORIGINAL:

REPLICA:

Improvements to study are the new font style and a major reworking of the timing mark graphic.

E-mail me if you are interested.

BTW: I'm searching for a clear photograph of a '69 911T timing sticker, can somebody help me out?

Darryl,
I've got both 69 and 70 T timing stickers, brand new and unmounted. Just have to do a minor search, since they seem to have submerged in the filing "system".

Would you like a scan of each when I dig them up?

Awesome Dave! Yes, please do scan or photograph them for me!

If you can't post them, please e-mail them to me @ darryld@aol.com

I'm hoping to do a "nutz-on" job of reproducing the '69 T for fellow Pelicanhead, Craig's (911T1969) restoration since they're NLA!

Looks good, but the font is still not very close (look at the lowercase g's).

Have you tried scanning an original and cleaning it up, so the typeface matches?

If you're using something like illustrator, you might be able to straighten out the descendant part of the g's, and adjust the kerning to make it match more closely (I notice the r.p.m. on yours is spaced out more, too)

I'm a little anal about that sort of thing, so most people may not even notice.

OK, I've had a cup of coffee and feel more civil now. We're not talking about "replica" $100 bills here. I've observed a couple things about Porsche's foil labels in my somewhat detailed comparison of about 40 originals over the last couple weeks.

1. They are random, character placement and spaces are random between models and years, even within the same year.

2. Factory "replacement" foil labels, when they were still available, are not even close to way the originals looked in font style, spacing and even color of the gold foil. I've even noticed that they get re-worded, substituting terms like U.S.E.P.A. for U.S. Dept. of H.E.W. when it was no longer valid.

At this point I would venture no reasonable person would detect the differences of the sticker when installed without an original sticker to compare it to side-by-side. Since an "original" sticker is an extinct species, this isn't a high probability.

So compared to no sticker at all, take a good look at my "replica" and enjoy your recreational anality in this context.

Darryl

I've looked at the various iterations you've posted and think they look tremendous. Are you going to make the stickers available through our beloved host or any other means? As you can see from my signature line my '69E Targa is going to need a full set one day.

Man, it's getting there! The plus/minus sign is still off, but hey, who's counting? Like I said before, the type geeks will never be happy, but concours judges I'd bet aren't font geeks.

Yeah Kenik, there is always going to be something somebody doesn't like about these labels since I'm just using an off-the-shelf font to make them. I guess I looked at making these things as doing a favor to other Pelicanheads who are as passionate about their old Porsche as I am and needed to come up with a substitute since the factory doesn't do so anymore.

I'm not a vendor, don't need the money or the headaches. I kind of enjoy the outlet for my artistic expression and don't take kindly to anonymous, "drive-by" criticism of my work. If it's not up to your standards, don't engage me to make any for you. Certainly don't publicly dissuade others who think it looks just fine from their perspective under the license of being "anal." It's hard to distinguish the symptoms of being anal and having one's head up their ass on a public forum like this.

Comprende?

I think they look fantastico.

One simple change may be to make the surrounding outline a tad thicker.

Edit: ....and I think you're right no mortal will be able to tell the difference.

Yup. If you can add solutions with your criticisms, that's another story, right Darryl?

You need to calm down Darryl. Being anal is not having ones head up their ass, and if you post side-by-side pictures of the labels, what else are you doing but inviting comparisons of them?

Since I'm the only one who mentioned being anal, I know your comment was a veiled insult at me for my reply. If you don't want the critisism, don't post the pictures side by side.

You're trying to replicate a sticker that has no functional purpose in the car. If you didn't care about it looking like the other sticker, why make one at all? Since you are making one, clearly you're trying to make it match. Fixing one or two very small problems left would make your replacement label match the one you're attempting to compare it to.

Pointing that out isn't making drive by criticism, and I don't see any post on here telling people they're ignorant or stupid for liking the lookds of it, as you implied.

For what its worth, I think it looked good, and it should be a compliment that kerning and one or two letter forms are the only remaining differences with it.

Relax, dotorg, I received the same response when I hammered hard on the original sans serif font. I provided the same feedback as far as scanning goes, but Darryl is not to my knowledge, a design professional (like some of us ). Some of the techniques designers use aren't readily available to the enlightened enthusiast. It would be sweet to scan a perfect original decal, convert the bitmap to paths, path edit the shapes using the original image as an underlay, etc. It just isn't in some people's toolbag yet.

Darryl doesn't care if you criticize, as long as an in depth critique comes with it. After my "drive by" I provided the said critique, then went to great lengths to find the closest font match I could find. That is the font you see today.

Fire away.

Oh, my GOD, I've turned into a crabby middle-aged man!

Dotorg, I appologize for implying your head was anywhere other than above your waistline, but your generalization that "the font is still not very close" was not what I wanted to read first thing this morning. Now that I read what you're really saying is the "kerning" (a term I didn't even know until I looked it up a couple days ago) and a couple letters are wrong is way different than what I interpreted from your first posting. I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy using that analogy though...

I have to stop and realize not everybody who reads my postings has been part of the evolution of this little project to date, what you see here is the result of weeks of work on several models of these labels. Scanning an original would be a luxury, if "we" had anything more than a somewhat detail lacking photograph (the one you see) to work from, many things would be better than what is presented and trade-offs between labor investment and appearance wouldn't be necessary.

I would consider my work here done if I could inspire somebody better equipped and trained to take on this project and produce the perfect copies. The involvement of a trademark is probably what has kept the players in this field out of the game because the liability or licensing costs outweigh the profit potential. Third-party embroidered floor mats and side stripes are examples of Porsche's responses in this issue in the past.

Like my pal Kenik says, I'm all ears to detailed critiques with feasible solutions but realize I'm just doing this for the fun of it.

Darryl,
You've got a couple of e-mails. These are both new Porsche stickers.

Darryl, did you try the font in bold? It might make some of the line widths better...

Dave! GOT EM!!! AWESOME!!!

1969 911T

1970 911T

I owe you a couple beers for those! My pal Craig is going to be blown away with that much detail to work from!

Hey Kenik! I've played with font size and bold face to try and "fill the same space" as the original photo. I was pretty happy with the way the normal font looked over the bold but there is still some room for improvement is the weight. Dude, you're going to make a font "expert" outta me yet!
