Wideband O2 Sensor Location
I'm installing a permanent wideband O2 sensor. I have SSI's and a 2-in, 1-out Bursch exhaust.
Where should I put the sensor? My choices are either directly before or after the muffler. I've been told that his close to the muffler or tailpipe can lead to reversion readings. Anyone with a similar setup? Where did you put the sensor?

I always thought it should go before the cat.

Any O2 sensor, narrow or wide band, needs to be in a hot location. Hot locations are as near the cylinder head as practicable, but after the individual tubes have joined together so that you're reading the exhaust from at least one bank of cylinders. After the muffler won't work well, too cold.
In your installation, you actually need two sensors, one for each side. You can put them into a switch that enables you to read both with one meter, just not exactly at the same time. ![]() |

My PLX wideband instructions said to mount the o2 sensor before the cat and at least 24" downstream from the engine. They say the sensor will fail if exposed to temps above 850 degrees C.
On SSIs it looks like the best spot would be about midway between where the three pipes merge and where you connect the muffler. -Mac |

I have mine LSU04 sensor placed in front of the premufler on my 79 SC, the DANSK sports premufler (actually it just a straight pipe) came with a threaded hole for 02 sensor, it's placed on top off the pipe, just after the cross tube.
On pre 74' i think you should place it just after where the 3 tubes meet. That's the place where it's placed on the backdating systems you can by today.

LSU04 is heated and works well even if stuck in the tailpipe, no worries there. Somewhere directly after pipes merged is fine.

I welded bungs in the collection pipe before the muffler. I was concerned with the valve covers, but this location allows for plenty of clearance for the sensors.

That's a pretty good location, closer to the 3 into 1 location would have been OK too, but I don't know the clearance issues there. Are you using the sensor for just the Motronics, or both Motronics and a tuning computer?
