Air pump?

What does it do and can I take it off? I just found out that I can take the belt off and not have it runing, But if that is so why not get rid of it all ?

The air pump dilutes the exhaust emissions by pumping fresh air into the exhaust where it exists the head and enters the header. Nothing more. You can remove the entire assembly including the "tree-like" system that attaches to the heads underneigth the car, but you would haveto get plugs to fill the remaining holes. I believe a Benz part number?

Me I just remove the pump assembly and braket and leave the rest in place b/c i have to put it back on every two years. For me it was a choice of buying a new one with good bearings or conservbing the air pump for emissions tests. Removal also cleans up the engine compartment.

Do that Search thing and all will be revealed.

The pump adds air to the output which gives you the CO level etc. you have to have to pass emissions. The pump can be removed; just plug all lines. Ideally you would purchase cap nuts for the intake rack on the underside of your engine. Failing this, plug the line in the engine bay.

Keep everything. Put it in a box for the next owner as they are worth something and can make the difference in emissions testing.

Ditto.
I did that and with the help of the guys here I removed mine recently too.
Don't forget to plug the vacuum line and the main air line coupling - I flush fitted a cork into it.

Here's a pic of the plug next to the air injector. The plugs were purchased fom Pelican. The plugs are for 914 brake calipers.

These are what I used. The local metric fastener place carries them.
