I had a 1984 factory Turbo Look that was pearlessence - a three step pearl white (white base, pearlenssence and clear coat). It was a $5000 option and, at the time, impossible to match perfectly. I had a top end body shop paint some headlight trim rings for it - very close but not an exact match. They told me if I ever needed body work and paint, that they would need to paint quite a bit of the car to try to "blend" the new paint in.

It was gorgeous! The burgandy leather interior made it a real eye catcher. But I was afraid to take it anywhere unless I knew where I was going to park it. Today's pearl paints, like my Acura TL-S, are similar and can be matched. But... they just don't have the depth that the 84 had. The curves of the Turbo body made the pearl paint shift hues - sorry no pics (pre-digital camera).

It is the white Sergio mentions. Nice colour, but a real PIA to paint, as your preparation must be perfect, and the smallest factors affect the results. This makes touching up a nightmare, and as he mentioned often means that you have to repaint an enormous section of the car to get your blending right.

The '94 based Flatnose was offered in pearl white. Factory allegedly stated that any body repair would require a total repaint.

I always thought that the pearl was an additive that could be used with any solid color.

Rick, you are correct about "pearl", it is a powder that used to be made of crushed mother of pearl, but replaced with synthetic (plastic) mother of pearl. It is used to add "flop" to a paint color. Mixes well with metallics. Doug

I don't think this is a Porsche colour, but the PO spent some money on the pearl finish on my Heinz 69. Pics not that good but it looks really nice in the sunlight.
