Is the WEVO shifter worth the $$ over Robotek or Seine sytems?
Anyone try both of these? Comments? Thanks

The WEVO is pure bliss.......the best item on my entire car, and I have a lot of goodies on the 3.6 ---

I second the WEVO. I have never compared each back to back. Once I felt a WEVO there was no way I wasn't going to buy one. I spend my car $$$ very wisely (read: very tight budget) and I bumped a couple of other projects to fund the WEVO. I had just had my motor rebuilt so it's a $500 insurance policy on an $8k rebuild.

I think Wevo makes well engineered stuff yet you pay for it. Personally I rebuilt my 915 and added the Seine Systems kit which made a world of difference. It centers my shifter in the 3-4 plane and the new synchros and internals brought the 915 back up to snuff. The *ultimate* would be a refreshed transmission and some Wevo goodies...but if you're taking a stiff shifting 915 with troubles and throwing Wevo parts on I don't think that's money well spent. Not intended as a slam on Wevo by any means. To me the Robotek doesn't look like anything better than the Seine Systems kit, and as I recall its about twice the price. For $150 you can add the Seine kit, blueprint your shift housing and replace the bushings per the directions...and if it totally blows (which I guarantee it won't) your only out $150 + some bushings and a Saturday morning's work. Almost a no brainer to me...

Has anybody tried the Rennshift shifter. I'm curious how it compares.

Thanks BG--my 915 shifts very well in my opinion. Its a little sticky from 1-2 but overall is great. I just would like the spring loaded mechanism that lets you know what gear its going into. The WEVO seems like a great addition but is several hundred dollars more for what seems like the same thing as the Seine and Robotek. I'm only refering to the shifter (not the transmission kit).

I have the Wevo and I think it is great. However, I think the largest part of the improvement was replacing the coupler (the u-joint that attaches the shift rod to the transmission) and the bushings. I'd spend my money there first if I were on a budget.

I have the WEVO and love it. It is absolutley a joy to use. However, it does not "fix" all the problems. You need to make sure your coupler bushings are tight and that the coupler is adjusted properly as well. Fortunately those parts are cheap and the procedure is easy! I have trouble saying 600 is money well spent on a shifter, but, 600 is money well spent on a shifter in this case.

Still not clear on what the WEVO does so much better than the Seine or Robotek. They all spring load the shifter into the 3-4 shift position and in conjuction with the short shift kit, shorten the shift. Assuming no coupler and bushing replacement, its still a $450 gap here to justify.

The wevo is built to very strict tolerances, removing as much slop as possible. If you can move your lever side to side when in gear, you have slop somewhere along the line. The Wevo will remove the part of that slop that is in the shifter itself. The other kits will not remove play that is inerent to the factory shifter and it's minimum 19 years of wear.
That said, the coupler is a better suspect. I installed my wevo and could not use the car until I got my shift coupler (Wevo PSJ) because there was no way I could get out of 5th gear without being blocked by the reverse detent, so much was the play in the (original, very worn) coupler. |

The Seine Gate Shift doesn't shorten the shift. You'd need to have a factory or Weltmeister short shift lever already installed for that. All the Seine does is spring load the shifter and add the gates for 1st and 2nd. (Note that the Wevo or Rennshift doesn't provide the 1st and 2nd gates like the Gate Shift). BTW, I've been looking at all these options lately too. The Wevo shifter is so beautiful but I find the $600 price tag tough to swallow. If you already have a factory short shifter then the Gate Shift is a $150 add on. Seems like a no brainer. If you have to spend $200 on a factory short shifter plus the Gate Shift then the difference is $250 and you may want to splurge on the Gate Shift. I've heard great things about the Rennshift from the 914club board. At $470 it's priced between the Seine+Factory short shift and the Wevo shifter. |

How is the new design of the Rennshift changed?

I have a rennshift in my 914, and will soon be installing one in my 911. The rennshift is a great precision shifter. I chose the 30% reduction model and shifting is easy and precise
(a first for a 914) I believe the robotek, ans seine systems units are just bandaids for the 915 shift tower. I have driven cars with a Wevo shifter, and it is a nice piece of engineering, and it should be for the price. I recommend the rennshift. just the opinion of a happy customer

I have the wevo shifter and coupler. I do not regret having spent the money on it and am very satisfied with the feeling of the installed product.

I installed one in Jack Olsen's car, and he loved it. His old shifter had the Robotek and all the goodies. It was pretty ideal before. But after the WEVO shifter, it was perfect. I nice upgrade even above the other upgrade.

Wevo is worth the coin...worth buying the entire kit. I did, a part at a time. I'm not going to own a 915 without one again.

James,
I have an '85 with the leather shift boot that comes up all the way to the black plastic knob- no shift tube shows. Will your unit allow me to hide all the chrome shift tube so that it looks stock? Is the 1/2 plane sprung loaded like the factory 5/R plane? Same or lighter spring tension? Simon
