What is Excessive oil usage?

77 911s 2.7L. Is 1 litre per every 160 miles really excessive. It leaks a little bit each day but not too much. Most is going out the tail pipe. Would a a leakdown test tell me with certainty what is causing this usage. I use 20-50 Penzoil.

Thanks

PK

Very excessive. Most say 400-500 miles to the litre/quart is about the limit. You must be fouling plugs on occassion? Time to tear it apart before it flies apart.....

You are beyond excessive, you are in rebuild territory.

You didn't give much other information about the life history of this engine that might have contributed to the current oil consumption situation....there are many factors that will ultimately have this result, but no question, this is by any standard excessive. It is not my intention to start an "oil brand war" here and I certainly couldn't prove it, but I (and many other other DIY's and mechanics) are a little suspect of long term use of Pennzoil as perhaps a major player in these cases????

I have only owned the car for a month so I do not alot of history on it. I know the head studs were done and all the emmissions parts have been removed. The valve covers were also done. Oil leaks are evident around the exhaust manifol at the heads on most cylinders. It must be leaking onto the H.E. because I can smell it with the heat on. The axel seals were just done so nothing from there. I was told from a good source that the engine was rebuilt about 75,000miles ago.

At that level, I'd suspect you must see a fair amount of oil smoke on startup and decceleration... That's very excessive..

Agreed . Way excessive . Check out those leaks , maybe a large catch tray , if that is not it be very careful . I would go for an immediate eval . Did you PPI?

I'm not familiar with the known problem areas with the 2.7 (other than the head stud issue), so I suppose a compression test, followed up by an examination of the valve guides and seals would be a good place to start (go from the least to the most serious possibility). Hope it turns out to be on the "least" side.....good luck!!

Do not notice the smoke on Deceleration but I do on acceleration. Did not do a PPI. I got for a price that allowed me enough room to do some major work. The car runs real nice. Great performance, pulls hard right to 6000 rpm but will now take it alot easier. Sounds like the inevitable is going t happen. If interested the car has 9/10 paint, excellent interior with a few touchups, new potenza tires rebuilt tranny and brakes plus much other work. It is a silver Targa with a tale. I really like the car and have no issues with puttin a few buck into her. I will post some pics tommorrow when I can figure out how to do it.
Thanks to all who replied

your oil use is extremely high. I did a top end for worn valve guides when I hit less than 300 miles/quart (fill the tank, fill the oil ).

Before you look for a rebuild, I would suggest you clean your engine and identify any external oil leaks.

Do you have any leaks on the ground after the when the car sits for a while?

Look at the external oil lines to see if they are leaking.

Check you oil return tubes for leaks.

Chack you valve covers for leaks.

Once you have identified the external leaks, pull the valve covers and see if you can wiggle the valves.

Have a compression and leakdown done to see if you have valve seat or piston ring issues.

Good luck.
