Hard brake line replacement in '69 911S

Unfortunately it appears that when I replaced my rubber brake lines I damaged the left rear hard brake line. So, I have to replace it. I don't see any other way of getting this line out unless I drop the engine? Anyone else replace their hard brake lines? What did you do?

Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Shane

New hard lines can be bought at better local auto parts stores, they usually come in 8, 12 and 20 inch and up sizes. You will need to bend to fit so buy the tool for that as well. Another option is to order directly from Porsche through here or the dealer. Not terribly expensive either way. If you go the local route, bring your old line in to match the thread on the fitting and the end of the line. You want "european" lines, look closely as the japanese and other stuff looks very similar.

If you don't have a set of flare wrenches, buy a set. They are like a box wrench with a small space to slip over the brake line. They grip much better than an open end and make it less likely you'll damage the lines.

I can't imagine the engine needs to come out, unless you're talking about the line that runs in the center tunnel...can't help you with that one. If it's the line on the trailing arm it's a pretty easy replacement.

Last, always soak the fittings with penetrant as much as possible prior to loosening any hard lines.

if you mean the drivers side inner hard line, that might be a pain. I just took mine out today and it was easy as I sat on the floor wear the trans usually is .

That one snakes over the torsion tube to the Tblock over on the passenger side.

I doubt you can even see the block with the trans in.

good luck on that one!

I just messed up this line as well, it's part #901.355.627 and it looks like it can't be replaced easily. This line connects to a T connector on the right rear. It loops up and over the trans and to the other side. I am thinking I will just get some new bulk hard line and go under the trans and across and use the trans support to protect the line from damage.

Smpiers what did you do?

I ended up dropping the engine and transmission. I couldn't get the old line out let alone trying to place the new line back in without damaging in. The brake lines I received required bending which was a little tricky and not exactly "factory" when I finished. Took me about 3 hours to drop the engine and I have never done it before. Just follow the steps in 101 projects book. Now I am waiting for my next paycheck so I can order the $200 or so in parts to do the oil leak fixes.

Seems like my one little projects always spiral to much larger projects.

Good luck and if you are able to replace this line without removing the trans-engine let me know.

Smpiers thanks for the quick reply, I know it can be done I just need to bend my own tube. That just sounds wrong. As far as attaching it that may take some patience and a crows foot wrench. I may just fab a special crows foot for the job by cutting up a flare nut wrench.
