Haven't done this myself, but I guess alloy wheel cleaner (the foaming type), combined with a small brush should do the trick?
Cheers!

The motor I'm building up now had been pressure washed/degreased and left in a shed for a while. As a result it had a lot of corrosion. I used a 3M "Roloc" white finger disc to clean it up. It leaves some swirls but I does a pretty good job.
You need the white version as it is the finest - good for aluminum. A body shop supply place might have them. My local place didn't have the white ones though. -Chris ![]()

By far the shiniest engine I have seen goes to 350HP930.
![]() You can check out his rebuild thread in the engine rebuild forum for complete details, but according to him it takes many hours of meticulous polishing. Of course having the engine stripped down and out of the car helps a whole lot. Having said that, check out eastwood.com for a full ine of metal polishing supplies.

Have your case cleaned at the shop where they have the "dishwasher." Then, if it's aluminum, you can work on the surface using a solution with lye in it. Plain old laundry style lye. It will eat your hands and bleach your driveway, but caustic cleans AL nice and bright. Also most non-ferrous metals. But, if you have a mag case, paint it.
BTW, as odd as it seems, there are acids that also clean AL. Some acids will darken AL, but a few brighten it. The primary acid is hydrofluoric and is probably one of the most dangerous acids there is. Phosphoric acid is what used to be found in wheel cleaners. Both have been used industrially and, to a lesser extent, in architectural cleaning of aluminum. So, whatever you do, be damn careful. |

some hydrogen atoms are more closely bound to the rest of the molecule than the Al atom would be; and in others, they aren't
... that's the explanation for the acid effect Zeke noted above.

Here's my fan. Lots of wet sanding steps, then buff with tripoli and rouge. It stayed nice for about two days... It looks great, but does require constant upkeep.
