Help-Mounting Holley Fuel Pump

I am in the process of mounting a new Holley 5 PSI/67 GPH electric fuel pump in my RSR clone. The mounting instructions say to mount the pump as low as possible to allow gravity feed from the fuel tank. The instructions also say to mount the pump vertically with the motor end up.

While it makes sense that the pump should be low enough to provide gravity feed from the tank, I can't understand why the pump would need to be mounted motor end up.

I plan to mount the pump to the front cross-member in a horizontal position with the pump end next to the cross member and the motor end pointing towards the bulkhead where the master cylinder and fuel tubes sit. This will give me enough clearance to mount the front suspension pan without interfering with the pump.

My only other option, would be to mount the pump in the smuggler's box. This, however, would not give gravity feed to the pump at the lowest fuel tank levels.

Will I run into any problems if I ignore the instructions about mounting the pump vertically and mount it horizontally as described?

Does your car have a brake booster?

No brake booster. The starting point is a 73 1/2 911T.

okay, I was thinking you may have started with an SC. Why not do it like the RSR?

How do the pumps remain primed when they are mounted above the fuel tank? The Holley instructions call for the pump to be mounted lower than the fuel tank.

I would be tempted to mount twin pumps like thew RSR if I was sure the pumps would remain primed. Remember...I am running PMO carbs not MFI.

Tom, I have my pump in the smugglers box (a little higher than the original pump), and don't seem to have any problems with it. They do seem to be able to draw the fuel up to the pump without trouble. I wonder if Holley wants it mounted motor up for safety reasons? Maybe if the seals get bad it would allow fuel to enter the motor?
I've seen people mount the pump in the engine bay (not the best idea) and they can pull fuel from front to back and uphill. Better to push than to pull.

Perhaps in case there's an internal leak. They probably don't want raw fuel running over the electrics in the motor section, sparks and all.
