Bigger MC

I’m thinking about upgrading the Carrera brakes on my SC and wondered if anyone has done this using a 23mm Master Cylinder. I understand that MB has a 23mm truck MC that requires some modification but haven’t been able to find out exactly what that means? Any other recommendations? I’ve done the usual searches, but have not found much other than it’s a good idea with larger calipers.

What year is your SC? If it has Power assisted brakes (a brake booster) you can use the '78-'79 930 MC and it works perfectly.

To Carrera brakes on your SC ? No need to change the MC... Even with 993 brakes on my Carrera I just used the turbo MC... and they are four piston front and rear.

Actually, it’s an ’82 SC that already has ’84 Carrera brakes front and rear. I’m thinking of going to ’44 S2 calipers. I got them for free, they look like they will bolt up but I’ve read that larger calipers like the boxster 4 pots require a larger MC. Thanks for the turbo tip, anyone know if anything else will work?

It’s a track car, no brake issue at all, ever. Around here it’s called L’Shanderitis (gratuitous upgrades just because)

Dave,

I've looked into that as well. If you need a part #, let me know. I'll retrieve it.

Since you are looking for the un-boosted master, it is the "Merc truck" mc. Apparently it requires a longer actuating rod to get the full travel out of the unit. Steve Weiner and VCI both sell them w/ the appropriate parts.

Some claimed that since it's physically bigger, it is a tight fit as well. Others have had to resort to a few whacks from a BFH to make space for it to fit.

some threads w/ the Mercedes MC info:

Sorry, I was unclear, mine is “boosted” as I believe all SCs were. I need/want a bigger MC for a boosted system

Dave, I can’t edit my post and I forgot to say that I read your references and see that the 930 is probably the best. I did try a “search" but didn’t get those two or any others on point for that matter. Weird, I do better with Google searches.

again - I have a boosted MC also - 930 MC - S4 is the same virtually as the 993. I also have 993 rears with a Turbo rear rotor.

Ditto on Jeremy's setup. I have the same thing with the 930 MC and the balance and pedal feel is excellent.

Search on his name or mine and you should be able to find our threads with all our upgrade info in them.

Don't do it, the carrera calipers have the exact same pistons as the SC calipers.

Even w/ the smaller Brembos which do need the 23.8mm m/c it presents a problem to those w/o a very strong leg.

As mentioned you would want a '78-89 930 m/c for your SC IFF you go to Bremo or similar calipers.
