Oh No, I split my Carrera Calipers

Well, I while back I split my nice set of Carrera Calipers to rebuild them and get them all cleaned up. I then found out that splitting the calipers is not one of my best moves as the work to get them back together is not trival.

However, I have succeeded.

There are two issues when splitting the calipers, the o-ring seals that fit between the halves and the bolts that are used to hold them together.

O-Rings: The o-rings are readily available if you know where to look. They are part#901.351.928.10 and only cost my $1.35 a peice. However, they were on backorder and took a while to get 16 of them. A bit pricey, but they are the correct part.

Bolts: My original bolts were a bit pitted and had seen better days. However, the original bolts are M7 and M9's and impossible to locate replacements. I therefore converted my to standard sizes, had the holes bored out a little bit, and fitted them with 12-point high quality ARP bolts. These are also a bit pricey, but are very strong.

I also had the caliper halves powdercoated red and all the hardware gold zinc plated. They look stunning to say the least...take a look.

Man, you're doing some top notch work on that car! I can't wait to see it all together!

I hope I can do somewhere near as good a job with my 911.

Nice work, Britain. you may have run across my saga in a search. The seals ...? they aren't in PET and I really looked hard for them; can you tell me anything more about them? patkeefe found some nice ones and he was so generous as to send me a set in the mail, but I don't think he got them through a porsche part number.

Nice Dryer, I have the exact same one

Those pictures were a bit dark, here they are again a little brighter.

Wow, they look great! If you were to do another set would you split the calipers?

I have about 4 extra that I bought just in case. They took over a month to get as they were on backorder. I called my Porsche dealer guy and he was able to look them up and get them for me.

That depends. I can get all the parts but all the machining that I had to get done sucks.

You must have been lucky, I called several porsche dealers and they all said there was no part and that you had to buy the whole caliper. I even called mercedes parts dealers to try to get the seal that warren (early S man) thought would be the same, a larger ATE caliper but probably with the same seals. they came up empty handed as well.

if anyone is interested here is my SAGA. It goes on and on, maybe just read the first and last posts, if you are interested:

split calipers - seals - Warren?

I wonder if Pelican or Stoddard could get the part (and bolts).

Can your local Porsche dealer and ask for that part number for the o-ring seals.

I read the entire thread on your dilema about splitting your calipers. That is what got me worried.

I split mine and also powder coated them. They have been sitting for months just waiting for me to reassemble them.

Did you use any assembly lube on the o-rings? What torque did you use on the bolts?

Use Brake cylinder paste or equivalent on the seals

You can assembly with brake fluid, I use it every time without issues.

As for the bolts, torque them to 7ft-lbs first starting with the inner two bolts. Then go to 17ft-lbs all around.

Thanks Bill.

Thanks also Britain. Have you leak tested the calipers? I am wondering if mine will hold up under pressure...

The is absolutely no reason that I can see why they wouldn't. I haven't leak tested them yet, but will get around to it. We do this to 914 calipers all the time and have no issues.

Been here, did this. I split my RR calipers for my 75 911s. I went to Jim Ellis Porsche and they had all the o-rings you could want. Give them a call - 770.216.7590. tell em I sent you. I just bolted them back together. There is the thing with the bolts, tho. They are NOT M40's, nor anre they M30's. They are a special fastener called Ribe. I finally found them on the web. You will strip them with anything else.

Kelly,
thanks for the info but I did get the o-rings there a while ago. The calipers have been sitting in my garage just waiting to get reassembled. You wouldn't by chance have the RIBE fastner, would you???

Interesting. RIBE (RIchard BErgner) is a German fastner company with presence here in the US.

yes, I do still have the fasteners. I had to buy the 3 tool set for $20 + shipping. The guy is a little rude, but he delivered. Get them here:
