993 3.9 liter slip ins w/steel cyl walls
I would like opinions please from the real air cooled engine techies on this board.
I spoke with Roy at Motormeister yesterday (please lets not turn this thread into a MM opinion fest) they have a new slip in set of pistons & cylinders for 964/993 that increase displacement to 104mm or 3.9l these are a true slip in no machining. They are alum outers with steel inners, allowing the displacement increase and running thinner but stronger cyl walls. Curiously this is the same technology that was used in last months (May 2005) Excellence in the 9ff 248mph turbo car according to the article steel lined cyls are used in high boost engines and the technology came from F1 using alum pistons in steel cylinders as they are 4 times stronger than alum cyls alone. This seems like a win/win situation, what is the downside? (MM aside) Thanx Marv |

Gee Marv, let's see; MM offering F1 technology...hmmmm...
[long thought process taking place.] Let's ask the Pelican guys, we KNOW how they regard MM's work, right? [more time goes by] I'd go for it, sounds like a safe bet to me. Hey! Maybe they could make you some that are even bigger, so you could be the first 4.0L around...

CMW Racing used to make 4.0 and 4.2 liter kits. I don't think the company is around any more.

Jeremy964 sez: How about different thermal expansion rates for one...
This is something they address, since the steel liners have a similar expanison rate as the head studs, they do not grow as much as alum cyls. so no more possibility of pulled head studs. Should be better than straight alum? right? |

From what I have read, Porsche went from the Biral cylinders which were steel cylinder aluminum finned to the nickasil which were all aluminum because to increase the cylinder size to go from 2.4L to 2.7L. The larger engine gave less space between the jugs and required aluminum's better heat transfer to allow for smaller fins
Looks like MM is going retro and is re-selling the biral. Was the 9ff water cooled?
