Is this rotor toast?

Took my rear rotor off and found this. Is the rotor toast? There was a 3rd crack opposite these 2 as well. Car braked fine, I'm changing pads and painting calipers.
Is it destined for the trash?

Um, what kind of rotor is that?? I have never seen a rotor with vents on the braking surface. Or is that some kind of Photoshop "unfolded" image? Either way, if there are any cracks present, I would replace them with a set of OEM replacements (Zimmermann or Brembo). Relatively cheap preventative maintenance/insurance.

It's the rear rotor out of an 85 Carrera. The angle of the picture gives an illusion that the vents are on the surface when actually the cracks are on the inner emergency brake shoe surface and the vents you see is where the right angle occurs from the inner brake shoe surface to the disc pad surface. Since the cracks are on the emergency brake surface and therefore not under stress during normal driving I thought that maybe the defect won't effect the rotor overall.

Thanks,

Gost

I'm guessing the PO must have done so. I have admittedly taken off with them on but release them quickly as it's very obvious when you have them engaged.
You think the rotor is re-usable?

I personally would toss it. But I run my car on the track, not that the streets don't need any less brakes. Looks like someone drove with the hand brake on. To make it easier on you, you may measure the width of the rotor (in the regular brake pad section) and find that it is close to the end of it's service life anyway.

If the cracks would be in the regular brake pad section, I'd let it slide, but there is no telling what those cracks will do, starting in the emergency brake drum section.

Its a paperweight. Toss it out. The cost of a new rear rotor is not worth having it explode on you in the near future. Any cracked rotor is garbage.

Replace it.....

Hi G,

New rear rotors can be purchased from a number of sources OnLine for $59 each.

Why are you even considering saving money on something that can't stop your car, or might break off and create more damage than $59?

This is an easy one. A true no-brainer.

It's in the garbage already. I asked the question only because I'm not familiar with Porsche normalities and wanted to see if this is a common occurance and " Oh...they last forever like that, half the rotors do this...no big deal!" Experience told me to toss them but I wanted to hear what the veterans have to say.
They're GONE!

Thanks guys,

Gordon

I would say that for street use are marginal, for the track no way! Replace them.

Wasted... get a new one..

Nine9six 05-26-2005 10:31 AM

Its trash. Dispose of it, and check your other rotors as well.

response is obviously overwhelming. The garbage patrol escorted them away today. Fried Chicken....good stuff!
