Thanks guys and thanks Shaun for posting. Hopefully it will be done soon. Still have doors and some small pieces to paint. Hopefully when I paint the doors they'll match nicely with the car. I should have left on. I have more than a few blemishes the pictures hide. Most I can live with, the ones I can't my autobody friend told me he would help fix. Overall I feel pretty good about it considering the time allocated, the work environment, and money. Eitherway I love it, definitely has my stamp on it now.
Anyone looking for the what not to do's when painting, please let me know. David |

Did you do that painting yourself?
Where did you get the paint color-matched? I ask because mine is Mexico blue, too...

Thanks everyone.
I’ll give the quick story. I decided last August to strip and repaint. Before starting, I knew there was a bit of rot on the front right fender but other than that, the rest was a surprise. I had rot on both front fenders, and the door sills. I also had a 2” piece of steel missing on the right rear quarter where the fender meets the bumper extension. To fix I basically cut out all this rot and replaced. My rule was basically if I could poke hammer or screwdriver through it, it was coming out. I made sure to POR-15 everything I cut open and repaired including the back sides of the metal I welded in. The other big surprise to me was that the car had been in an accident on the right hand side that extended from the right door all the way to the rear quarter. For the doors I basically pounded out a bit better than they were, welded shut the holes that were left from whoever pulled the doors before, and then bondoed. One of the biggest pains in the butt was the area between the door and the tire. It was all warped. I had no idea. It was covered by a plastic stone guard. Well, since I was leaving the rocker panels off , I couldn’t really cover with the stone guards so I spent a lot of time getting it as good as I could with the pound and bondo technique. This area I actually had to tinker with a few times even after I primer the car. Oh, while I am mentioning bondo I should mention that from the accident, new pieces were welded in from the where the rear lights are to about a foot in. These areas aren’t perfect now but most people won’t notice. Well the rest is just primer work and painting. My biggest blunders were not painting with the doors and tail on the car. I still need to paint so hopefully my paint matches ok. Number 2, I went to paint the doors the other day and mixed the paint with the clear instead of hardener causing extra work. Fortunately for me, Dupont 3612s takes the mixture right off with out hurting the primer and bondo below. Oh, don’t use alcohol to clean primer, not good. Last and my worst blunder was rolling the car out of the garage after only 2 coats of clear. The visibility grew so bad in my garage that I was nervous I was missing spots as I had with the primer the first time painting. Anyways, the oak tree that over hangs my driveway was shedding these little black specs about the size of a pencil point. Luckily most came out with the block sanding. There are a few I will address someday and the remaining ones are not really noticeable so they’ll stay. Left to do: Fit Duck tail, paint remaining parts, put back together, put on Carrera Script (black/dark blue not sure) and paint Fuchs a darker blue though I do sort of like the black. I can't post pictures for some reason. I'll see if someone can post the before and during pictures. Oh Shaun... Sorry about the writing. Thanks again, David |
