Another chip thread
God you got to love these “chip” threads! So much so that I’m going to start another one.
OK, most critics’ say chips net 5% increase in HP and some torque on otherwise stock engine. Aftermarket chip = $300 ’84 3.2 (no other mods) = 10.34HP price per HP = $29.01 I like that, $30/HP. Can’t do that any where else. OK, now the pundits say sport muffler + intake + chip = 20 HP Sport muffler = $300 K&N = $45 Chip = $300 Price per HP = $32.25 Still can’t do that much for any less! Add SSIs = $900 (I paid $600 last year but I’m good at finding stuff) Most say 12 to 15 HP but lets go conservative at 13 HP (don’t forget we already have the chip, muffler and K & N) So now we have 33 HP over stock (15.9% increase) Price per HP = $46.82 Notice we’re moving beyond the point of dimensioning return. But $46.82/HP is still real good without cracking the case or removing a head! And most can do the work themselves. Almost forgot the additional 300 RPM over stock!. We regularly participate in DEs and Auto-X in our cars. Ever notice how peek HP and max RPMs are close in Porsches? 300 RPM can mean not shifting into 5th on long straights. Not hitting the rev limiter in passing situations. Getting the car straightened out coming out of sharp turns before up shifting. Or just a little extra time to fully utilize that max HP. The factory liked it so much they built that into their “Club Sport”. Bragging rights = Priceless Almost forgot; doesn’t the factory charge about $300 per HP for NA vs. Turbo? |
