blinker fluid...

My 73 RS clone 3.2 is finally alive....please don't ask about the starter ring, or the missing 1st and 2nd gear....and why it always "lugged" when accelerating. Lights all work, but turn signals don't blink...they just stay on. I already "topped of all four corners with premium blinker fluid. Sounds like a relay...yes? And where would he be hiding? Hopefully in the front trunk, as the CD panel is history and the relay on is gone too. I'm getting tired of working the turn signal lever up and down while driving to create that special blinking effect when preparing to turn.

you may have used a silicone blinker fluid

instead, use DOT 4+ it is a premium blinker fluid without any silicones

you may have to get the entire system rebuilt - the reservoir, the muffler gearing and bearings, everything - that silicone can really take over... and often can't just be flushed out

re the CD panel -- considering the rebuild cost, I would just junk it and get a nice DVD panel, or maybe a Blu-Ray one -- or just hold off a while as iomega just announced a really nice panel coming out soon...

I believe the blinker relay on a 73 is on the driver's side of the front trunk just in front of the dashboard. Up inside the front trunk sort of close to where the fuel filler tube comes through. If I remember correctly, it's a square relay (but I may not be remembering correctly). I think Pelican has a photo of it. You can sometimes access it more easily by pulling out one of your gauges (tach since it's large) and reaching in front the dashboard side.

Hope I'm not leading you astray...

And, as always, check the grounds!

Hey Lars, congrats on bringing "Tombob" to life. In my 86, the turn signal relay is pretty much where Andy said. It's one of a bank of 3 relays just behind the oil level/pressure instrument. I can't remember which one. Maybe the 73 is different.

If it's not the relay, have you messed with the wiring at any of the light housings? I had exactly the same symptoms a couple months ago when I had the bumper off and didn't get the connections just right during the reinstall.

Congrats!!
as lateapex911 said, I'd check the grounds, but if both side stay on, that would mean bad grounds on both sides... Do the 4-way flashers work?

I think he'll need to replace the turn signal synchros and bearings, and yeah, go with the DOT 4+. That silicone stuff can mess up the blinker hoses and pumps!

I just fixed this on my 72. Some moron put single filament bulbs up front and the exact same thing happened.

Do your flashers work? Same relay..

enough with the blinker fluid...

Thanks guys....I have a few things to check. Hey Dave, how did your and Bill's times end up Sunday at La Junta? I met some of Colorado's "finest" on the way home on highway 71. I got lucky....he liked the car and let me slide. I told him that there was a much faster black carrera behind me...being driven extremely fast by a blonde. Did you meet up?

Nope, we didn't see any polizei on the way back, which is a very good thing cuz we were going even faster than on the way down....

I took a rock in the windshield which put a chip the size of a quarter on the passenger side

Bill did roughly 1:04, I did a 1:06.9, Craig had about 1:02.

geez randy, that is so irresponsible of you. . . . Suggesting silicone blinker fluid without cross-drilled brake-lines. . .how could you?

I've seen blinker bearings seize at high speed and it's not pretty.

I don’t know about this silicone blinker fluid. I wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve heard it's incompatible with the blinker hoses. I’d recommend synthetic blinker fluid. Here is the description:

Quote:
Are you blinkers sluggish? Do they make an annoying ticking noise? Do they not flash fast enough? Here's your solution. Little do people know, blinker fluid should be changed every 150,000 blinks! KaleCo high quality synthetic blinker fluid meets the highest D.O.T. standards! KaleCo blinker fluid provides you with thousands of hours of reliable blinking without the wear and tear on the flash-synchro's that the other blinker fluids cause! KaleCo blinker fluid will not lose its viscosity, even in the most extreme situations! Why buy that old dino-blinker fluid, when you can get our unique patented synthetic formula? Satisfaction guaranteed!! For use in any car.
I’ve also had good luck with the “MotorClean Internal Engine Cleaner:”

Quote:
Is the inside of your motor dirty? Most likely! Some people will tell you the only way to clean your motor is to tear it down and rebuild it. This is no good!!! KaleCo internals cleaner is a special combination of iron, graphite, and copper shrapnel of assorted sizes that work to sand and polish the inside of your motor! Add 2oz per quart of oil in your car. New engine clean powder should be used at every oil change! Bottle includes pouring mechanism. Comes in 16oz packages. Do not eat.
These, and other fine products, can be found here:
