clunk in the driveway

re

I drove my 84 carrera home for lunch and parked in the driveway. After lunch i went out and started the car and was shifting from 1st back to reverse and heard a clunk or strange noise. I stupidly decided to back down the drive and it did fine and put it in 1st and started to drive away and then I could not get it in 2nd... or after i stopped I could it was like the clutch was pushed in but the gears were engaged. I limed to work without second and made a appointment with the local porsche shop.

They confirmed that upon draining the oil the were syncro teeth etc, actually didn't get to see the parts though, They refilled the oil and I drove it home and it's been parked for the last 2 weeks.

Except for 2nd, all other gears work perfectly, actually the transmission had work on it at at 136K and it now has 212K

Work then included Syncro rings , teeth 1st and 2nd and sleeve, 1st shift, shift hub, 1st and 2nd, bands etc..

I have decided to pull out the motor and transmission (tommorow morning) and either send up the trans to JW for a fix, emailed him about this or to attempt this myself.

I've rebuilt engines chevy, vw's etc so i have mechanica
ability but i've never worked on a transmission and actually made it a point "not" to as people that deal with these types of beasts know the ins and outs of them that i could easily overlook.

Couple questions,

One is I see reading my panorama that a rebuilt transmission for a few different shops run about $1500, whereas my repair could be in the $800 to $900 range. Are those trans really rebuildt? or just looked over and obvious things replaced.. seems parts add up quickly in there. It looks like parts alone in 1997 for the rebuild were about $1533 dollars and I'm sure not everything was replaced etc.

Should i attempt this myself? I'm a little afraid as I wondering about the failure here, as the transmission was shifting perfect, 1st 2nd, all the gears etc and no hint of problems, I'm thinking somthing broke etc and if i have not drove it maybe a slider? or somthing might have been the only thing I just don't know.

Last is maybe shipping would be cheaper on greyhound to seattle to JW but he didn't like the idea of picking it up there maybe if i put in some cookies?)

At any rate ... boo , i miss my car....

Just pouring over my bentley and this forum to extract the motor/trans easily and safely..

Thanks

I think refreshed is a better word to use when describing a trans that has been described in an ad as rebuilt.

rburn,

You'd be hard pressed to find somebody that is more knowledgable and generous as John Walker. If you want your transmission rebuilt by a master, get it to JW any way you can. Period.

There are others that do fantastic work, but JW stands head and shoulders above the crowd. (Physically too, he's a very tall guy! )

That being said, read this thread.

You'd be surprised at how easy these transmissions can be. I certainly was.

I'm just amazed, I followed the link Randy has here. I've only known about this board for a few days.

The story of Randy's rebuild is just great

I will need 1/2 syncros this year. No real question. JW all the way.

yeah I'm thinking that. It's a matter of how to get it to him lol. I have to check a few travel options. The trouble is i go to Los Angeles like every three months but not north to seattle... Last time i drive there it was 9 hours. So i'm either going to ship it UPS which i think it will be in the $120 each way range or greyhound myself and it up there or drive up in one of my cars etc etc...

Hey John, do you have most parts available to you? If i was to show up for an appointment to do the 1st and 2nd... I think you figured about 3 hours, can i drop it off early one day and pick it up that same day or do parts take "Days" to get? I know it's a guess as to what it needs.. I'm thinking that 2nd is the culprit but I've read many times you suggest doing 1st and second at the same time.

I just don't feel comfortable doing it myself, I mean I could complete the job but I really don't know what I'm looking at if there are some other tail tale signs. As i type this i keep thinking that it's best left to a person that does it for a living.

Thanks for your time.

Rob

Here's the video, Sorry it's really for HighSpeed internet. I sized it down and have two files but still the smallest is 11MB, which for a modem is too big. Any smaller so that it would work on a dialup modem and the video would not be worth watching
