A/C Recharge???

Can any of you East Bay fellas direct me to someone who can recharge my A/C. I believe my car still is using R12. Also, before recharging, should I replace the receiver/dryer? I see both units being sold new on ebay for about $30. Are these acceptable units?
I know R12 is going to be scarry expensive.

I just recharged my 82 SC. Didn't need to replace the receiver/dryer, and the system was empty. Now I've got cold air. The freon itself cost me $120.

can't direct you anywhere, but unless you've switched refrigerants i don't believe you need to change out your receiver/drier. just get the system charged. you can get a leak test performed, but if you know that you don't have barrier style hoses, then you know that your freon is always going to leak through your hoses anyway and require more frequent charging. good luck.

If you don't know how old your drier is, Yes, you should replace it. The drier serves several functions and overtime
if the desicannt breaks down it will clog the expansion valve.
If you found a replacement drier for $30.00 on (cough Epay), go for it, just make sure the ports on the drier match your hoses. 911s through 83 typically have flare fittings and from 84+ they are o-ring. If your hoses are flare and the drier you buy is o-ring, ask the seller if they include flare to o-ring adapters with orings.

Since the ac system does not have a dip stick to check the oil charge, ask the ac tech you find to add at least 4 ounces of refrigerant oil when they go to the charge procedure, and if they are good guys ask them evacuate for at least 3 hours.

Thank you for the info...very informative regarding the o-ring and flared fittings. Since I have an 87, I will assume that I have the o-ring style.
