119200574

11 = Type 911
9 = 1969 Model year
2 = Engine type (2 = 911E)
0 = Body version (0 = Porsche coupe)
0574 = Sequential Number

It should have engine number:
629xxxx

6 = 6 cylinder unit
2 = 911E
9 = 1969 Model year
xxxx = Sequential number

Best,
Grady

There are numerous books that will break down the VINs, but there are as many web pages that will do it also. Just Google it.

Jim,

Good idea. I’ll do some searching and post links, you the same.

Evan, most of what I have are the little Porsche “Tech Info” books. This particular one is “Porsche 911T 911E 911S; 69, 70, 71 Models; Technical Specifications.” Mine is the 1st English Edition dated 4/73 but it is supposedly available from PCNA as part number WKD 421 020.

Jeff, The 4th digit is 1 for 911T, 2 for 911E, and 3 for 911S.

Porsche had a very nice Teutonic numbering system. There are many exceptions. I have never found a source that was perfectly accurate – not even Factory publications.

Best,
Grady

Here's one that's for 356 and 912 BUT it will decode early 911s.

http://www.356a.com/

Here's the results

model year type style coachbuilder begin end
1969 911E coupe Porsche 119200001 19200954

This vehicle would have come with an engine from the following types and number ranges:

internal name common name first number last number
901/09 911E 6290001 6292455
901/11 911E Sportomatic 6298001 6298583

And another interesting site
