911 SC Battery Check ?

Need a little help & info please on my 82 911SC battery issue. Just installed a new battery after the old one kept losing it's charge. The battery maintainer kept it up enough to start the car but after a few hours the battery barely turned the car over. I assumed a new one was the fix. Last night I took the car out with the new battery and twice it started and stalled then the key just clicked (like a dead battery). When I tried the key a third time everything was normal, started etc. The only thing on is the clock and radio, no alarm or lights on. Is there a check I can run on the battery with a meter to check for draw or current drain elsewhere ? I'm still baffled over the starting after it stalled, no power, just a click. The car is a 26K mile 82 SC, bone stock. Any ideas or tests to try will be really helpful. Thanks guys, Steve

Problems can include; bad ground on starter (or else where), loose connection at battery cable, bad ignition switch, short circuit, charging problems.

Try turning the lights on with the key in the run position. If lights are bright but engine won't turn over problem likely not battery or charging system. Usually, different starter noises, clicking then fast means starter ground or wire problems.

wow, 26k SC. you have got to post a photo.

with the car idling, did you test the voltage at the battery. gotta be the first step. you need to see better than 14V. does that alt light on the dash light up? no lighty, no chargy. get that multmeter.

Check this connection on the starter. It is key to the engine starting and charging properly. Two thick red wires held on with a 13mm nut. One comes from the alternator, the other straight from the battery positive terminal. Make sure it is clean and secure. Disconnect battery first!
