3.0, 3.2, or 3.6???

I just bought my first P-car, an 84 Carrera Coupe but needs a drive train. I bought a tiptronnic a month ago from a fellow pelican with all conversion parts including flywheel, shifter, linkage, every nut and bolt to make it work but dont think Ill use it. Ive had offers to trade it for a good 915, but Im going to be in the market for an engine. Knowing what you guys do about these cars, what engine do I want to put in my car. There doesnt seem to be 2500. difference between a 3.0 and a 3.6. Some one told me to keep it original and put the 3.2 in it. Guys like William Knight says dont do anything BUT 3.6!! What do you think??? 3.0, 3.2, 3.6???? What trans??? 915??? Thanks, Mark

84 Coupe

3.6 if you want speed. Stock 915 transmission will be fine if you don't abuse it. Difference in power between a stock 3.2 and a 3.6 is HUGE! Your car will be a bastard with a 3.6, but if you don't intend on recouping your expenses any time soon, and just want a fast 911, do the 3.6. The 3.2 will be a bunch easier to install, and you will recoup more of your investment if you intend on selling. 3.2 will amply motivate your 911 and provide plenty of thrills, but the 3.6... more than ample power with even more thrills.

Good Luck!

If you've got the funds, then a 3.6 is the answer. You just can't beat that kind of horsepower and torque all wrapped up in a factory stock engine. It would take big mods to a 3.2 and huge mods to a 3.0 liter to end up with what you'd have by simply installing a stock 3.6.

If starting from scratch the 3.6 is the only way to go. There is no comparison between a stock 3.2 and a stock 3.6.

The difference is cost is minimal and easily justified by the extras a 3.6 has, like knock sensors, dual ignition, '90s tech instead of '80 etc.

The extra installation difficulty is also not worth worrying about. This is all well known and routine stuff these days.
