911 starter

I have a 1980 911 sc that is in the first stages of a update. Today I went to start it and the engine fired great except that the starter would not "shut off". I could turn the engine off and everything was fine. Upon restart the same problem. Tapping the starter with a hammer would make the starting problem intermittant. I assume the solinoid is bad. What is the easiest way to get the starter complex out. thanks

chewed teeth on the starter and ring gear probably. pull out the starter and see what's up. you can see the ring gear teeth in the starter hole as the engine is turned by hand. there are usually three patches of bad teeth 120° apart on the ring gear.

easiest way to get the starter complex out is in a tech article or prev. posts

summary - pull off the tabbed wire and unscrew the nuts on the solenoid for the fat wires.

Now...
reach your R arm up on the other side of the trans (while lying a bit on your side) and up over the trans. & around to the internal hex nut and unscrew that w/ whatever sized Allen fits it (8? 10?). This is Porsche Repair Yoga postion # 673Q (aka "snake creeps up the greasy tree limb").

The other nut is more obvious and takes a 17 mm socket.

I purchased a 10mm long (6") hex bit with the ball shape on the end. Its about the best tool I found for getting at that top barrel nut.

I can actually get the hex into the top barrel nut but can't seem to put enough pressure with a 3/8 ratchet to break it loose. I don't want to buger it up. Any other suggestions?

Kroil or pb Blaster; tap with hammer; wait; tap more; lather, rinse, repeat

Have you tried using a very long socket extension? You may need daisychain several to bring the ratchet handle within reach.

I just replaced my starter for the same reason. I was afraid the ring teeth had been damaged but they were fine. As was pointed out to me, you can move them along with a screwdriver, easy with the plugs out. Be sure and make sure you are rotating in the correct direction. Put it in 4 th gear and have someone lightly push the car and you can see which way to go.. Works great and sounds solid now.. what a joy.. It was embarrasing when it would hang up..
