It's pretty common to get some popping under the conditions you describe when using a free flow exhaust like SSI's or B&B.
I don't know if it is because it leans things out or the lack of muffling lets you hear the pops you would get from existing exhaust leaks. -Chris

Most likely an exhaust leak at a flange...

exhaust leak. I'd put money on it. Like was said, it's gonna be your flanges where the heat exchangers connect to the muffler.

Exhaust leak is only half your problem. You probably still have unburnt fuel entering the exhaust, mixing with the air sucked in on gear change/decel through a hole or bad join and bang! you need to fix both, Imo.

My '84 used to let out with a loud "pow" between shifts, under hard acceleration, typically at the track where it echoed off the barriers.
I only noticed it with a "test pipe" and Bursch muffler - not with the stock exhaust. |

I've got no idea what your car is, so it's hard to tell you how to fix it. Let it idle and feel for escaping pressure around the exhaust flanges. If it's an early carburated car, they're pretty easy to set and balance if you get a synchrometer...
