Actual theory behind daily driving and performance
I effed up my 3.2 gauges, and I got tired of watching the dangling little bulps blink in front of the steering wheel when I signaled and stuff as well as the look of plumes of wires sticking out of the little circles, so I've been driving the 964 a lot. Every day for a week.
After a few days of this, the car really started to smooth out. No burping on taking off, and the acceleration was smooth and robust--in fact, it just kept better and better. Usually I drive the car maybe once a week. Is there any theory that actually supports the car driving better when driven every day? My 3.2 by now has like 215k miles. Starts right up, kicks @ss the entire time I drive it--the more I beat the hell out of if, the more it says "thank u sir, may I have another."

My SC was the same. A nice car in daily drtiver condition. By no means concourse. But it was treated as a garage queen. I guess teh previous owners were afraid to break it or something. Maybe they couldn't afford to fix it if it broke or as it wore out parts.
Anyway I drive it every day now and with at least one interstate trip per week at 375 miles round trip. Runs much much better. I think it just was full of carbon and shellac. I drive it above 4k on the interstate, you make the correlation for speed. ![]() I'm so elated I want to find a 964 with airbags. Maybe a C4 to drive every day. A Carerra 3.2 would also be nice. My motorcycles are teh same way. I think it has to do with whether or not the engine really gets up to optimal operating temps to fully combust the fuel and keep teh heads and valves clean and freee or junk. Air cooled engines take much more drive time to get to the optimal operating temp. I think those that run the car for 15 minutes a week are doing as much harm as good. Just circulating the oil and cycling the battery isn't enough. It has t be at teh right temerature. for a significant period of time. My father used to call it going out for an 'italian tuneup'. Tomorrow is fathers day. Maybe a good time for an early morning tune-up since he's not around any longer. |

Better yet, take it to the track. The Roach always drives better after a track day. Revs are more effortless, shifting is smoother and the car generally feels more in tune. Unless you break something

Mine runs much better after a track day.
100 miles on the highway, then 100 miles on the track, followed by yet another 100 on the highway make the engine purrrrr.... On the weekends, I won't drive it unless I can run it at least 25 minutes.

re Burping and sputtering
When a 911 sits for long periods; oil can slowly make its way, out of the tank, slowly backwards past the oil-pump. Then the case fills with a bit too much oil, and some makes it past the rings. Result; it starts, and runs, like crap.
That's the theory that stuck w/ me.. . .I think John Walker posted it here a while back.
