They shouldn't be chrome plated if they are factory finished. Most people here are put off by chrome plating but if they are in great condition, the price was right, and it was the look you wanted then I'd go for it.

If the are "chrome plated" I would look elsewhere. Hopefully they are polished well and just look like chrome. If they aren't clearcoated, rub a little metal cleaner on them and check for black oxidation. Too many issues with chrome plating these that I would search for ones that aren't.

I'm not positive what year they went to 9's but I'm pretty sure the earlier 930's came with 8's.
My matched set ( 7's & 9's ) came from a Turbo. I think he said it was an 86, but not positive. Their in the stock anodized finish. As for chrome, I wasn't interested in the chrome ones I ran across, too shiney for me ![]() I hardly ever see them in the anodized finish anymore. I think the used set I found on Rennlist a couple of years ago was the last good set on the planet. ![]() |

Do a search here on the board. There's a Porsche service bulletin warning against chroming Fuchs wheels. Apparently chroming weakens the structural integrity of the wheels.

There's no such thing as a "stock chrome finish." They came anodized. Now, it's possible a dealer did an aftermarket chroming job and sold the car, new, with chrome wheels, but that's now how they came from the factory.
The price is right. The owner may not realize that they're anodized and not chrome. I think you should probably take a look at them, but if they're chrome, you should pass (especially if you're going to stress them at AX).

Here is a pic of my 87 w/ 16 x 7 & 8's. My car has been in my family since it left the dealership new ... mine are chrome and have flaked. The thing I've come to realise is that chrome, even on wheels made of more plating freindly metals than our fuchs, should be viewed like the paintjob on a car. It takes serious amounts of care to keep their condition "like new" over the long haul. Just like paint, you will most likely be looking at refinishing every decade or so, unless you really take care of it. Just my 2 cents.

Brandon: I'm guessing that the dealer did aftermarket chroming. They didn't come from the factory chromed.

Did somebody say 7's and 8's on an 87?
I just got my car back on its new feet last week. I took my old 7's off the rear and put them on the front. I bought used 8's for the rear. I had Al Reed re-anodize all four first, in the early style. I would stick to anodized or polished. It depends on the color car. Check it out... ![]() ![]()

That is Reeeeally nice Evan. I love the early style finish on your car. Good taste!
I have a set of 7s coming from Al reed via Jason Cullen. They should look exactly like your 7s except mine are "frost" anodized which I belive will make them look a little whiter, but still silver of course. |

These are 8"+6" X 16" stock, polished wheels. A person can polish these things to look pretty close to chrome.
If you want shiney ones, wait for a good deal on a set of polished ones. From what I understand, once a wheel is chromed, it is doomed for any other type finish to be added at a later date. Drums

Thanks guys!
I'm very happy with the change. I had Al do clear anodizing. He polishes the wheel first then has them anodized. The frosted looks good too. Here's a close up of one wheel. ![]()

You will probably also have to roll the fender lips on your car (at least on the front) with 7s and 8s. I just went to 7s and 8s on my SC and had the front left rub under hard cornering. I'm going to roll both lips though to be safe. This is at Euro ride height (25.5"F) and with 205s in the front. I think there's no way I could get away with 225s in the front on my cars.
The rears BTW are fine and aren't close to rubbing. |
