No pix right now, but I had Maaco add a second color to my 944 race car to two-tone it. People continually tell me I've got a great looking car, and are always suprized to find out Maaco did the blue parts. Cost was about $300. Well worth it.

Maaco is just a franchise name.... individual body shops as it were.
I have had a '72 Karmann Ghia sprayed Guards Red years ago and it was very very good. I tipped the foreman and the painter before hand and promised another tip after a good job. I have seen $3000.00 paint jobs and one could not tell the difference. I know of one Maaco in NJ that does a lot of classic and hot rod paint jobs.....seen quite a few, and all were very nice. I spent $6K on my '72 Superbeetle and was dissapointed. I'll be going back to Maaco. Now do not forget........you get what you pay for.......so go for the best you can afford. Good Luck

no pics, but my brother just paid $1399 for a two-stage paint job from maaco on his white '94 blazer..the workmanship was excellent for the price in mine and his opinion, and he's a car dealer who buys and sells every day. but i think it's true..you don't who might be painting your car that day..someone good or someone so so..

Most of those quikie shops like Maaco actually have guys that do a decent job SPRAYING the paint. However a paint job is only as good as the prep work underneath it. You can get an okay Maaco job if you do all of the prep yourself, including some of the detail masking. The single stage paint they use doesn't last too long unless you keep it waxed religiously, if you can pay the extra $ for 3 stage paint do it.

I'm not here.

So, do your own prep work and have them shoot it with a two stage? Is there any orange peeling or any other thing that may happen due to a low cost paint job?

I had my 81 painted by maaco about 6 months before the picture was taken. The paint looks good but if you get close you can tell there is some orange peel. Also the paint chips real easy and tends to flake around the chip, but you get what you pay for. I paid about 950 for it along with some body work. I actually got rear ended and the other guys insurance gave me about 900 to fix the body work so I actually got it painted for $50. For what I paid I think they did a good job however it took about three times longer than they said it would. I also went by once a week to make sure they were doing everything right, and it was good that I did since they were continually forgetting things. What I did and I thought it worked well is to remove the bumpers, lights, all window trim, all glass, sunroof, seats, whale tail and anything else save the fenders and doors. I left the windshield in to drive it to the place and took it out when i got there. This way all they had to tape were the window holes. I was glad I did when I saw them roll out an older jeep cherokee which had both bumpers completely painted body color, it looked pretty funny.

If you do your own prep you can get a decent paintjob from MAACO. I have a '75 Fiat Spider that was painted by MAACO. Looks quite good with no peel. But they didn't remove any parts, just masked and there is some overspray on a tail light gaskets and such. Not a big deal, but easy to avoid if you remove all your stuff first.

Any paint job "looks good" from a distance, heck rattle can looks good from a distance....its the close-up where you separate the quality from the amateur jobs.
I have done alot of body work over the years and my uncle was a professional painter and I learnt alot from him. Here is my old 240hp Datsun pick-up we both painted using PPG products (primer, base and clear). We did it all ourselves in a rented paint booth inclusing wet sanding and sghooting the clear and the paint job plus body work was still around $2grand! I went from this: ![]() To this little beauty: ![]() With paint, you get what you pay for and quite frankly many of the guys who work at body shops are transient just using the job as filler work when really it is an art and talent. Products make a difference. The thing that Macco has going for them is volume. The buy ALOT of paint. Therefore they get it pretty cheap. It cost almost 500.00 in MATERIAL with PPG to paint my tail alone. This was a complete two stage system (I did get their highest quality) with primer/sealer etc. You do get what you pay for with material. But, PPG is like Rolex when it comes to pricing...
Prep is the ABSOLUTE key in any paint job. If you specify what you want Macco will do it. I would paint my track car there, but not my street car... But, ultimately I'd probably paint either one myself.

My dad once got his 944 painted at maaco. After a couple of years, he found a spot where the paint had started to come up. It was just a small spot on the bumper near the exhaust. He took it back to maaco and they repainted it and blended the whole car to make it look right. It turned out great, and they told him if he EVER had another problem to bring it back and they would take care of it.
I am thinking of getting mine painted soon, and I don't have the money to spend on a huge bill for paint. I would do all the prep I could myself and bring the car with all the parts off. Keep the pics coming!

Here is a previous post of mine with pics of a 944 I took to Maaco many moons ago. I did all of the prep work myself, and it turned out great: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/72077-worst-paint-job.html#post473704 ![]() |

I tried to post pics of the mess that they made of my Jaguar but there were too many pictures so my post was rejected.
Some of the many problems with the job were: runs, lots of them, they painted over the pinstripes that I paid them to remove, they didn't properly mask the sunroof gasket, and they took some of the paint off when they removed their masking tape. Below are a few of the pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Based on my experience, I would NOT reccomend getting a MAACO paintjob on any car that is valuable or that you plan to keep.

I helped a friend of mine do all of the prep work and then off to MAACO...not too bad, a little orage peel but it buffed out. 1st pic is with 2 weeks of sanding to go. The 2nd is after being painted and the third is at a local PCA concours where we finished next to last.....

They did file some of the runs out after I made a fuss (I shouldn't have had to tho, they should have fixed it before they said the car was ready). They did put the new pinstripes on (over top of the old ones) - good thing I wanted pinstripes after.
Having done plenty of body work and painting myself at my dad's shop when I was growing up, I was disgusted with the job. I wish I had done it myself but I still had a dirt floor in my garage at the time. All in all it took a car that would have been a 10 and made it a 7 at best - I'm still pissed off about it and I no longer own the car, I traded it for my first Porsche.
