87 Carerra: Do you know how to remove evaporator

87 Carerra: Do you know how to remove evaporator, and expansion valve. The clips are tight (maybe I need to bolt it down and try to remove the clips then) Is there an easier way to get this to come out of the smuglers box. It wiggles but that is it it doesn't seem to come straight up and out.

Have all new hoses, and am sending 2 condensors and evaporator to be cleaned and pressure tested. Need to get this out first though.

Thank You.

Regards,

I can help with the clips...they are a bugger. I ended up using a pair of strong needle nosed pliers to pull up on the "tab" of the little clips holding the top on. I then used a long flat bladed screwdriver to sort of walk the clip off. The top then pulls off IIRC. Getting them back on is another story. I think I ended up using a couple of tiny sheet metal screws in place of the clips and it seems to have worked fine.
Good Luck

there's also a vent and sensor that inserts thru the passenger area that has to be pulled out before you can lift the assembly out.

I did the same thing. Worked great, and will make life much simpler next time I'm in there.

the passenger area? Where do I go look exactly for that vent and sensor. I don't want to remove more than necessary but understand usually someting else must come off to get at a part. I guess one of the issues of a hand built car. So I accept the difficulty as the quality of hand built is important. Too bad the new ones are not hand made .

Not sure what you mean by "the passenger area". There's a sensor (capilary tube) that is held in place with some "tarry tape" for lack of a better phrase. The sensor will have to be moved out of the way before you can remove the evaporator. Also, there is a return from the cabin that has to be disconnected (using the methond John describes above), and as I recall there's a piece of flex ducting into the cabin. On my car, the flex ducting disintegrated when I tried to remove it, and I had to replace it.

under the passenger foot floor board there is a duct that has to be removed and several sheet metal screws around the opening that screw through the firewall into the plastic housing of the evaporator.

In the smuggler's box there is a valve( i.e sensor ?). It is covered with tar lick gel. This piece moves out of the way? So remove the tar and look for screws/bolts, or it just moves aside, or comes up once remove the clips and the flexible duct.

Mr Bernard, I suggest a break from all this work you're doing is in order. Sit back a have beer. You're going way too fast for everybody to keep up. I can't even keep track and all I had to do the last five days was mow the lawn and put on some door panels.
Thanks for the wrong color appbiz.
The bentley book is a must, next day air if you have to.
And I'm just kidding with you, I hope you're laughing with me. Good luck with all your fixin up

Evaporator off. I did not have to go to passenger's compartment. After removing the clips it comes out easily. Next to order parts and install the new barrier hoses.

the whole box and everything can come out by removing the lower passenger side vent. then you can get the clips back on. good luck otherwise.

You should clean out the evaporator box, too. Use John's advice and remove it so it can be easily cleaned.

Instead of replacing the clips, I drilled small holes and use sheet metal screws. MUCH easier to replace, and if you drop one into the box it's no big deal...just use another screw.
