Camshaft crack timing question

1988 911 3.2 Carerra. Cams with 930 up, crank on Z1. When dial gage on cylinder one, do u find the 1.1-1.4 valve overlap adjusting value after 360 or 720 degrees of crank rotation. Manual only mention one revolution, u tube video shows two revolutions. Mechanic went with one, started loud crack and it quit. Can be rotated manually without binding. Will check all valves, need to know proper timing tech question above also.
Sorry should be crank not crack

Pin both cams
On #1 cyl you rotate crank 360 degrees bring in setting to about 1.4 by setting pin.
Place dial on 4 and rotate 360 and match setting of #1.
Sometimes it takes finesse to match cams.

That is what he did, but it made a really bad sound. We will check valves next I guess. Very frustrated. He did a top end rebuld 20000. It was running fine, but E clip came off chain master link and chain jumped when he was changing to a one clip master link. Cant believe I could have to rebuild again do to this.

Give us background. Real background as to who the dude is that is wrenching on your car. How much wrenching do YOU do? Is it in a shop or in your garage and he comes over and farts around because he has a 73 Monte Carlo that he rebuilt the engine on?

Did you have the heads rebuilt? Who rebuilt them?

Chain links are child's play. Cam timing is child's play.

How did this happen?

The more you divulge, the quicker we can get you on track.

I am very mechanical, have done everything on this car since 1993 for 250,000. 13 yrs ago was rebuilt be a prof P mechanic without incidence. He did replace right cam which did not have a 930 mark on it. This mechanic is just foreign cars. Really is brilliant and I have seen him do engines, trans anything on high end cars. 20,000 miles ago which the fuel lines needed replacing and the intake manifold was off there was oil puddleing on the exhaust valves. We dropped the engine and did a top end rebuild. Heads were sent to a shop he uses in Richmond. Was fine until E clip popped off timing link chain. Bought a new one clip master link. He did not mark TDC before changing the link and the chain jumped. Since right replaced cam did not have the 930 on it he got out of position and we had #1 and 4 both both on compression at Z1. He rotated right cam 180 degrees to correct. I think we need to pull the sprocket to prove rotation of this cam. I am not sure if the sound was the chain or a valve.

He went in early and this was the autopsy. Says we can remove head while in car and replace any bent valves, stripped sprocket, rocker arms. We pulled chain sprocket on right unmarked cam and our TDC mark was spot on.
I know you all will tell me to go somewhere else, but for a multitude of reasons just can't. This is the one of the few times in my life I asked for Prof help with someone who had all the tools.

Can nut may not have been tight.

We had a motor recently that some clown had tightened the nut with a cold chisel - lasted 20 miles.

I watched him torque it to 88 ft lbs, but he kept saying he did not understand why it was loose when he took it off.

So what are you going to do now? Obviously this mechanic is not familiar with porsche motors. You say you can't take it somewhere else? Why not ? I understand loyalty but this guy toasted your motor.

Looks like you have a lot of wear on this piece. Quite a few teeth appear to be gone.

Towards the bottom of this page:

How worn are the camshaft gears?

Eaten up gear.
That's all part of jumping time and the loose bolt holding it all together.
Broken rockers is the bent valves and the possible damaged Pistons.

Am concerned about all the metal filings and will they hide in the middle by the crank. Will he be able to take head off while engine in car and properly address and fix damaged valves. How would he assess pistons. He did it all 20,000 miles ago and several track events without incident. Doubt I will be charged anything except parts. I live way in the county betw Fredericksbury and Richmond Va, very rural.

I would want the motor removed and gone through top to bottom.

You've done half jobs and added a bandaid right along, time to do it right. Take the engine out and fixit all the way to the bottom.
Another point, does your cam turn in the cam carrier as I have seen them frozen in the carrier with the same damage.

Cam does turn. Could this happen if chain tensioner was not functioning?
If I were to drop engine and ship to a rebuilder, any names. Nothing fancy, just a good job

It is one of my options. May have found a 2010 Cayman S 10,000 mi asking $40000 which could be track and daily until I get this running again at my own pace. Engine stand, Z block, dial guage, sprocket holding wrench, sprocket key screw and other special tools, do u buy all of them?
