Angry Broken G50 case

Popped the engine/tranny out of a friend's car today expecting to replace the clutch ... and found this ... so ... looking for a g50 for an '88 Carrera ....

Anyone seen a failure like this is a G50? Preventable?

Yep, that's the third one of those that I've heard of. The other two instances only had one broken ear, the one on the left in the pic above. I had that same problem (one broken ear). We think that the old G50 update that requires boring that ear out may have contributed, but not been the main culprit. A wrench on the Rennlist had the same thing happen. He believes that a combination of having the old style update done as well as having the clutch pedal out of adjustment is what causes this issue. The reasoning is that if the clutch pedal isn't adjusted correctly that it is allowed to go down too far and with the assistance of the hydraulics mucho pressure can be put on those ears.

My mechanic tried to weld and rebore mine. Didn't work. The other fella had his welded and bored and it worked great. I think I payed about 1200 for a tranny from www.oklahomaforeign.com.

I broke the inside ear (left ear in your pix) when I pulled my tranny (87 G50). A local shop welded it up for me and reamed the holes to accept the updated shaft.
I have over 10K on the car since and haven't had any problems.

This one broke while driving, and the earlobes are nowhere to be found... I guess that rules out welding? Can a good welder reproduce the ears to a reasonable degree, then drill them out?

Yes, of my case and the other case that I had heard of prior the ears were gone and the welder had to recreate them.

Mine popped when I put the clutch in at a toll both. Kind of sucked, had to finish the last half of the 35 mile drive to where I was going and then drive back home again. Got really good at clutchless shifting up and down from 1st to 5th.

Just a quick update: the fork is an upgraded fork, but the pivot shaft, needle bearings, etc. are all original. I thought with the fork upgrade, the pivot shaft and bearings were also upgraded, and the holes in the case bored out to a slightly larger diameter (which would weaken that area even further...).

We're taking the transmission to JWE Monday to see what they can do...

!!UPDATE!! Jerry said not to bother trying to weld this case.... so, looking for a replacement case or G50 core...
