Left rear outer CV boot torn
Can someone guide me through replacing a torn left rear outer CV boot on an 87 Turbo? Do I need to remove the axle shaft from the trans in order to replace the outer boot?

No. Detach everything else from the axle shaft (brake, caliper, hub, trailing arm, shock, spring plate) and the CV boot will pull off the end of the shaft without removing it from the trans. If you dont have a Bentley manual you may want to pick one up for the exploded diagrams for putting everything back together.

I just had the car corner balanced and aligned...What you describe seems like alot more work than is necessary, but this being my first time undertaking such an endevor, I thought I would solicit assistance from someone who has BTDT. I am under the impression that if I remove the axle shaft from the trans, I can pull the whole assy out of the trailing arm without disturbing the alignment and balance. Does this sound reasonable?

I'm assuming that the 87 has the same axle type as my 90 C2, and that it's easiest to disconnect the axle from the transmission, remove that inner CV joint (circlip holds it on), and then remove the outer boot, lube up the outer joint as best you can with fresh grease, and slide a new boot on. I just had to do this, and it's a little messy, but not a big deal. If it's the same as my C2, then you need to use a big honking socket to remove the axle from the hub assembly (320 ft/lbs ?), and I didn't want to have to deal with that........

You described exactly how I believed the replacement should proceed. I believe its a 30mm socket, that gets torqued to 230 ft.lbs Cheers,
