Broken case need opinions
I have attached a few pics of my 77 7R case. The two areas in question are on the front of the block and both house studs for a cover. Is my case shot? I does not appear that there is a structral integrity issue but I really dont know. It looks like I can machine the two areas enough to bolt the cover together so it will not leak, will that make the case weaker and cause a failure? Please look at the photos and let me know if there is a serious issue or if anything can be done to strengthen the case.

I had a two large holes and my case and my local weld specialist just heli-arc welded and it was like knew. It should not be a problem.

Can be welded, just be sure the guy is comfortable and experienced with magnesium!

The bummer of it is I do not have the pieces to weld back in, it was like this when I brought it home. Could it be filled in drilled and tapped?
The real issue I see is the cover leaking. There is enough room to make a flat spot and use a nut and bolt to seal the cover. I dont want the thing to crack under heavy load, When I get back I will console a fab guy I know. Mike

The housing that the covers the pulley supports the back/fan end of the motor. It isn't a cover in the sense that if you removed it you'd have oil coming out. Are you have oil leak out of the broken hole or something?

Chris,
I see what you mean. It covers the bottom pulley and doesnt hold oil, it bolt to the motor mount. This is structral I think I'm screwed. Mike

Only screwed in the sense that it will need to be disassembled to be repaired properly. A welder will build the area with material & it will have to be machined flaton the mating surface & will have to be drilled & tapped. I can recommend a magnesium welding source for the welding if you wish, PM me.

CindyDuck,
When I bought my 1975, the same bolts holding the engine mount to the case were loose, and two had broken off in the case. This is a typical sign, and a typical location of the studs pulling the threads out of the engine case. Rex
