Bug motor in 912
 

I have need to get a junker 912 running temporarily and since I have a bug motor that is in working condition I thought I'd shove it in there for a few weeks until I can properly finish the job. Anybody have experience on doing this? It can't be that difficult. I'm looking for specifics on what trannies would work as well as connections.

Ken the Pelican 912 board is pretty dead. Try here instead...http://www.912bbs.org/index.php under the 912 help section.....Oh be prepared to cop sum flack over the bug motor, you run the risk of upsetting the porsche gods. Not a wise move.:eek:

You'll have to attach a rear mount to the bug engine somehow. They just sorta hung off the transaxle I think but you couldn't do that in the 912.

Depends on the year of the motor and the 912 transaxle. They make 180 and 200mm models.

Call Kennedy Engineered Products and tell them what you have. If the years are compatible they will tell ya or supply the required conversion pieces.

I'll back you up...a TIV is cool.

I think Harry Pellow coverd this pretty well in one of his books...not sure which one though...sorry.

I did a TIV in the 356....was more accepted than the 6 conversion....

BTW...a TIV in a 912 is a an easy install.

I used to have a 912 with an 1835 dual port webers on it. There is a conversion kit and a Kennedy clutch was used. The guy who did the conversion for me (Carl Monroe of Azusa, CA) has passed away and I sold the car, so I do not have any resource for details. The VW engine used a 912 motor mount which was slightly modified. An electric fuel pump was used with a pressure regulator as well. I'll see if I can find my old receipts from 15 years ago.

You can build a monster engine for an inexpensive price going VW.

They rebuild 912 engines on a regular basis, sometimes they rebuild 912s using VW engines when customers want to save money and increase output.

I'm sure they could tell you which VW engine is used.

check the renegade section of the 912bbs. there's lots of info there, as one of the guys just did a Jake Raby built motor in his ride.

Thanks for the info guys. I already know about the flack from the purists. I give it on the 911 side :) but it's all good. This isn't a permanent conversion, I just need it to get the car going for awhile.

Interestingly enough the car has been modified to fit a 911 motor so it's already "hacked" according to the purists. I can handle manufacturing a mount for the dub motor.

It can be done. You'll need to do a little research as to how to make the flywheel/clutch work, as well as fabricate a mount for the engine.

A Type 4 would be better though.. More power, less fabrication
