Steering wheel wobbles.....and getting worse!
About a week ago I noticed that the steering wheel had a little up & down play. Seemed like about 1/8" yesterday it had increased to more like 3/8"
 This can't be good. Fortunately I did a search and found several threads and a tech article on replacing the steering shaft bushing. From the tech article photos it looks exactly like what could cause the steering shaft to wobble the way it does. So I've ordered the new bushing which will take about week to get here. My question is - is there any danger in continuing to drive it in the mean time? Can it cause damage to other components? Could I lose steering ability by something binding up in there?

Up and down in this case means radially along the diameter of the bearing, right?
No danger, just annoyance, if that is the case. Up and down toward your chest is another matter.

Thats' right it's radially along the bearing diameter not towards the driver.

Check is the steering wheel nut are loosed.

This is a simple problem. You need to order a steering wheel bushing from our host; remove the wheel and slide the bushing onto the steering shaft. 20 minute job. I did mine in a mall parking lot waiting on my wife. Covered in past threads and I believe in Wayne's book.

Thanks for the feedback guys. You've confirmed what I hoped was the situation. And amazingly enough this fix looks simple AND cheap! I have the part on order - should be here next Friday.
Nitrometano, Good point. I checked and I can see the that it's the steering shaft moving not just the wheel.

I just had the same problem last week. The original bushing went out when I was on the freeway, so I freaked out at first.
Anyway when I saw the nut was tight, I noticed the bushing was shot. I was acutally kind of impressed that the original one did last for 28 years... I bought one from our host which is metal and not plastic. Took no more than 10 min to put everything back together. Everything tightened right back up and will no longer have to worry about that.
