930 Oil check procedures....DUH

Need some advice on checking oil level in my 86 930. I have read it is to be checked at exactly 180 degrees but my gauge on the dash is not marked in degrees.. it has a long white bar at the bottom, then 2 smaller white bars, and then the redline bar. where should the gauge be for a 930 before checking?? Is 180 degrees correct for a 930 ?? I know to check it at idle with the engine running, but not sure how to read the gauge... any help appreciated as usual..

JerDe,
The dash oil level gauge should not be used; it's not reliable - really nothing more than eye candy.

The best way to check it is with the dip stick located in the oil filler neck in the engine compartment, at idle warmed up with the car on a level surface.

180 degrees F is around the first white bar. Thats the first one after the long white bar at the bottom.

180 is around the 9 o'clock mark.

You can buy a sticker and convert your gauge to numerical. ps, Porsche simply wants the thermostat to be opened for a correct measurement. In place of all the guessing, just warm the car up and touch the oil cooler in the right front fender. If it's warm/hot, the thermo is open. Then check your level. bw
